I stumbled upon this novel at my local library. The book starts out so slowly that I almost put it down, but I stuck with it. I'm glad I did! Belinda Starling's research for this novel was extremely thorough. Her attention to historical detail is impeccable! When I finished the book, I flipped to the back and read her bio. I was saddened to see that she passed away shortly after this book was accepted for publication. This was her first, and last, novel. The literary world lost a wonderful novelist! Rest in peace, Mrs. Starling.

Richly detailed and researched this novel brings the reader into lives unimagined before. You will love the heroine and her courage and intelligence surrounding the subject matter of smut literature, the huge clash of class and gender differences in 19th century London, and the abolition of slavery in this country.

This was such an interesting story. I never really thought about book-binding centuries before machines did the work and now know the artistry that went into the work. But, there was so much more to this book besides the art of book-binding. I finished reading it in a little over one day because I couldn't put in down. I love victorian literature and this one fit the bill. So sad to lose this young, talented writer. She would have been amazing.

It kept me going all the while living in the era of the mentality and activity of the upper and lower classes of London. My favorite historical genre reads.
