School Library Journal - School Library JournalK-Gr 2 An imaginary journey to a black hole is used to convey scientific information about black holes, but because the sophistication of the concept is not easily described in beginning-reader vocabulary, children will be left with unclear science and a bad story. The science is confused because of the difficulties in communicating clearly comparative sizes and time periods to this age group and in defining specific words used to present ideas (mass, gravity, X-ray, atom). The story is dull because the need to convey information severely limits the imagination. Science and story are not smoothly integrated, and as a result the focus is unclear. Simont's illustrations add color, humor, and action, but do little to increase understanding. Although this is the only book in print on the subject for this age group, children attracted to its appealing format will be disappointed or confused by its content.
