About the Author

I started working on family stories seven years ago after reading a letter my cousin Mike had sent my mother twenty-six years earlier in 1982. I found the letter among her things when she died in 1995. I packed it into a box with her aprons, jewelry, paintings and other keepsakes. It remained unopened in my basement for eleven years. Cousin Mike had asked for information about the family. His words stirred my quest for family stories.
"Julia Ann Stevens was the original liberated woman - married three times (first 2 men died!), came across the US. in a covered wagon, mother of 5 children, a journalist and newspaper writer, worked for women's suffrage until women received the right to vote. She died at 84 in Santa Ana in 1929: 'Grandma Garrison'"
I found this cousin in 2010 and arranged to meet him. Over the years he encouraged, supported and shared his enthusiasm for our family's stories
As a person who grew up not knowing my mother's family because she was placed her in a children's home during the depression, I was hungry for them. Passion for them drove me to learn how to write better. I don't consider myself a writer but rather a storyteller. Many in the family have stories that echo Grandma Garrison's perseverance and trailblazing spirit. I hope to write some of them.
I live in Minnesota where winters are long, cold and dark, just ideal for a storyteller who writes.
