Overview

Have you ever wondered what your dog was thinking?

Meet Bill. He's a big, affectionate Labrador mutt who lives with his master Vinyl and the missus at the Donegal Golf and Country Club. Rescued by his owner after escaping a puppy mill, Bill is a bit of an oddity among all the other purebred dogs: Emma, the miniature poodle, Hotspur the loyal border Collie, and Wolfi and Stanzi the fearless and courageous dachshunds.

Bill spends most of his days hanging out with his doggy friends and trying to obey all the rules that the missus has. But when his master's granddaughter Ruby shows up, things suddenly go from good to bad. Ruby has it out for Bill, and she'll do anything to get her way.

Told from a dog's perspective, this heartwarming, insightful, and emotional story of Bill and his four-legged group of gutsy companions will have you understanding life from a dog's point of view—and believing in the power of kindness.

In Barry Knister's book Just Bill the reader meets Bill who is a rescue dog. He appears suddenly one day while a man is taking his daily walk in Michigan. A relationship is forged and this novel is the story of this relationship. Bill spends part of the year with his new family in a golf community in Florida and this is where most of the story takes place. Bill and his canine friends often discuss their humans and part of the story is told through their conversations with each other. People in the neighborhood die or move away or go north for the summer. But because of a lie told by a child, Bill would not be going north with his family as he had in the past. Instead he is taken to an animal shelter. Things go from bad to worse. The author skillfully gives voice to all the characters in the novel. He exhibits exquisite insight into both canine and human psyche. The characters are not stereotypes of retirees living in a Florida golfing community. They are both appealing and complex and sometimes surprising. For me, the power of the novel comes from the story about Bill. While this is a story of survival and love it is also a story of devotion and forgiveness. There has been much written about the relationships between humans and their pets . This story covers this subject while also providing a look into the soul of Bill. In my opinion, Just Bill is one of the best books that I have ever read and I highly recommend reading this book. I will never forget Bill.I received this book free of charge through LibraryThing and I give this review of my own free will.
