Just Breathe by Rachel Brookes

For Savannah Rae, living life without her parents was unimaginable. But being blamed for her first love's suicide? That destroyed every part of who she was.

Gone were the days of innocence, happiness, and dreams. Now her days simply meant attempting to survive. In her mind, her only means for that was replacing her grief with men, booze and the fast life. And for five years, it worked.

When an opportunity to leave the nightmares of her past in Australia opens up, she takes it. Los Angeles beckons - with hopes of late nights, new beginnings, and the promise of a string of endless men to distract her, she can't wait to dive in.

One thing she didn't count on was meeting her match.

In the eyes of outsiders, Tate Connors has it all; the ultimate LA bachelor who is content with his lifestyle of wild nights, women and one night stands. He's Mr. Unpredictable with looks that could destroy any woman with one glance.

The craziness of Los Angeles throws them into the chaotic path of each other. Savannah becomes the perfect game, and Tate becomes the ultimate prey. Lines are crossed, emotions are smashed, and the idea of who they truly are begins to be tangled.

However, one thing will become clear.

They are more alike than either one could ever have imagined.

Beautiful story

This book started out beautifully...I was laughing and enjoying the characters as they started to reveal themselves. Then the writing and story line fell off and it almost seemed like someone else took over the writing. That's how drastic the writing changed for my reading. What happened to Mr. Davenport? He was predominant in the beginning and then practically vanished until near the end. This was a tragedy in my opinion because he told it like it was and didn't hold back. He's extremely likable and quite funny. The two main characters (Savannah and Tate) had physical attraction in spades. They are literally two players attempting to play the other. That game ends abruptly and I still don't get how feelings came into play since there wasn't a conversation. They read each others minds A LOT. They are both damaged by past events - which is one of the reasons they are players in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, I never felt the real people behind the characters. I also never felt chemistry between them and that saddens the hard core reader in me. In my opinion, there was way too much in the outline for this story. There are a lot of situations and tangents thrown at the reader haphazardly. A few select situations explored at length would have gone a long way in developing the characters and making the story a bit more relatable & enjoyable. I never connected with Savannah or Tate. There was only one character I could relate to and was captivated by...Lucas. That friendship came out of nowhere and Tate's jealosy bordered on phychotic. The book ends with you wondering when the next shoe is going to fall out of the closet (after the dozen or so that have already dropped and kicked under the bed). It's not really a cliff, but there really isn't closure either. It's not enough for me to pick up the next book, and if this wasn't in an anthology I (most likely) would not have finished it. It just didn't do it for me. One final pet peeve...everyone was gorgeous. There was not an average or pretty person in the entire book.

I was gifted this book from the Author for an honest review. I gave this book 5 stars. This is book one in the Breathe Series . . . The series should be read as a series and not as a stand alone.  Rachel Brookes is a phenomenal writer, she had me captivated from the very beginning with this book . . .  This is Savannah and Tate's book.  Savannah has been through too much in her young life she lost both of her parents and then she lost her boyfriend to a suicide, that she and everyone else from her old town blame her for. She is use to using guys to get what she wants. A break. She sleeps with them and then slinks off and leaves them after one night. She has rules and she never breaks them. That is until she moves to the states and gets a new job, new friends, and meets Tate. Then all her rules are all shot to hell.  She meets Tate in the elevator (Lift) going up to her apartment, and after all is said and done she finds out that he is the twin to her friend that she has never met until she comes to the states. This makes for an awkward beginning. :)  Tate is a playboy and sleeps with anything, if it walks and talks and is a woman he will sleep with it. He has his own set of problems but when Savannah comes into his life, his life is never going to be the same. They turn each others worlds upside down. With all that is going to go against them can they handle it and keep a relationship? Can they both put away their whorish ways and have a relationship? And when the past comes back to haunt them how are they going to handle it.  I loved this book, it kept me interested and turning the pages. I wanted to read faster so I could find out what was going to happen but wanted to slow down so I could savor the book. Yeah that is the kind of book it is. Tate is a heart throb, gorgeous, damaged man. He is beautiful and is so worth the time to get to know and be with. Savannah is not that bad of a catch either, once you get her walls down and she learns to trust you she is loyal and amazing. And although she has been hurt so much in her life I do believe that Tate can heal those wounds for her enough to be able to live her life without feeling guilt.  As her daddy said she needs to Just Breathe and let fate take her where she needs to be. Thank you for this amazing story .. I cannot wait to read book 2

Well, if you must know, I picked up this book because the main character has my name. I love to read stories with characters with my name. It gives me a chance to explore different personalities and stories. And to see if I can find a Savannah that I like. Plot: The plot is pretty much the same. A new girl, coming into a new country wanting to start off fresh. The plot moves pretty quickly between finding a new job, making new friends and of course finding love where Savannah least expects it. Characters: Savannah is character who is easy to understand. She hides her past with sarcastic humor and insults. She doesn’t like to give more of herself than she has too. But when she meets someone who she connects with, she is someone different. Watching Savannah grow as a character along with starting a new relationship is great. I loved getting to feel the characters emotions as well as taking a walk in their shoes. Love: The love interest is sort of similar and different. Similar because Savannah and Tate are each other mirrors. They both have similar upbringings as well as life styles. It was different because they each had to learn to love. They were both so used to doing what they wanted when they wanted, no strings attached. Now, they found someone in each other and are unsure how to keep that. It keeps the reader on their toes with plenty of relationship drama. Ending: There is another plot twist in the ending which I didn’t see coming. I have a feeling that this will either bring them together or keep them apart. Just Breathe is a great story that takes two very similar people on an adventure. Two people learning to love for the first time, multi-layered with plenty of emotions and decisions. Delivering a good story, Just Breathe is delightful.
