LaToya Hankins does the unthinkable and surpasses up her semi-autobiographical novel with K-Rho, a novel that chronicle’s the life of three women pledging to be members of the illustrious Kappa Alpha Rho. I found the characters to be well developed and realistic. The incidents described in this novel had me reminiscing of my undergrad years and the experiences I encountered. The fact that these girls, who met unsure of each other, became lifelong confidantes is admirable. LaToya Hankins undoubtedly demonstrates her gift of recounting the saliency of the college experience through her use of vivid details and relevant experiences most college students have encountered. When my line sister read the novel she had inquired if I had revealed some of our freshman tales to the author! While my initiation process differed to the ones recounted by the protagonist Kiara, it was beneficial to me to really evaluate the definition of hazing. Is hazing limited to receiving “wood” or is it an unnecessary series of events one has to encounter to be considered a “Sister”. Either way the sorority aspect was what drew me in but the strength and character flaws of the three women was what kept me. I found myself wondering if K-Rho was what made these three women sisters or if they would have been close otherwise. The series of events that really tested their allegiance to one another made me conclude that K-Rho served as a temporary sealant until the friendship fostered to cement their relationship.
