Following Donohue's previous novels, "Sensei", "Deshi", and Tenu" -- "Kage - The Shadow" is the latest installment in the Connor Burke Martial Art Thriller series. I enjoyed reading "Kage" so much I `m inspired to obtain and read all of Donohue's previous novels. Donohue has constructed a riveting page turner that weaves a complex story line that unfolds in modern day New York, Arizona and the Mexican border. Because the story is cast in a modern setting, and revolves around modern day ills (cross border drug smuggling, Mexican drug cartels, New York policemen andunderworld/gang members, hit men, etc.), the story - and Donohue's characters - are very realistic and believable. Central to the story is the main character, Dr. Conner Burke's, very realistic and brutally honest assessment of a life devoted to serious martial arts training - and the physical, emotional and mental sacrifices such a life style will entail. Donohue - a martial arts practitioner himself - realistically portrays day to day life in the dojo for a master Sensi and his only protégé, and the complex relationship and interaction, between them. It won't take long before you'll be "hooked" reading John Donohue's "Kage - The Shadow". Although Japanese martial arts training is central to the story, "Kage" has a universal appeal and I highly recommend it to anyone who would enjoy a complex, gripping crime/mystery drama and martial art thriller. Highly recommended.

It has been too long since the last Burke novel and this one. John Donohue though has made it worth the wait with a novel full of mystery, suspense, humor and soul. "Kage" is more than just a "martial arts thriller." It delves into the relationship between a martial arts student and his teacher. This has been a running theme since the first book in the series, "Sensei." It is not an easy, one dimensional depiction. The characters are quite complex. Donohue doesn't fear exposing traits of these men that are not the most pleasant. It gives this book (and series) an edge and depth that takes it far beyond your typical paperback thriller. They are not perfect. As both characters mature, their relationship is impacted by the experiences they share as student/teacher. Donohue is also an accomplished martial artist himself which means the fights and training scenes are more realistic than you find in most fiction. Hopefully, YMAA doesn't make us wait too long for the next installment in this series. Dohohue has said he has several more adventures already outlined. It will be interesting to see how Burke further develops, especially after the hard lessons he learns in "Kage." Fans of many genres would be well served to pick up any book in the Burke series.
