Reading Kaitlyn and the Secret of the Sea, carries me back to a magical time when my daughter was young and we spent time reading to each other. The story of Kaitlyn's adventure under the sea is suited for preteen children, but those who are much younger will enjoy a parent or an older family member reading it to them. Sevetlana Kovalkova-McKenna weaves a magical spell for those who enjoy a modern fairytale. It is reminiscent of the classic stories of yesteryear, but suited for our modern world. The story elements are strong, the characters intriguing, and the lessons worth remembering. There are many of us who believe in magic, but you will wonder as you read this wonderful story, if the author knows something that has escaped the rest of us. I highly recommend this book. This fairy tale should be appealing even those readers who don't normally find themselves attracted to such stories. The writing is poetic, seductive and sparse, all at once. With this style, you'll suddenly find yourself lured into Kaitlyn's world and accepting the deep dive into fantasy without realizing where you're at. You'll want to find out the secrets of the sea that await Kaitlyn and you'll enjoy the author's subtle twists and turns that keep you reading. While Kaityln is the main character, which means the book should appeal primarily to girls, there's a boy character--Tingo--who holds his own and provides a balance for young male readers. I'd recommend this book for children who've recently moved into chapter books and like a little escape from dry land and everyday life.

With Kaitlyn and the Secrets of the Sea, Svetlana Kovalkova-McKenna takes us on a fantastical adventure in an underwater world. Kaitlyn's love of music, and a flute passed down through the ages, help her battle her fear in the mysterious new world she's been plunged into. Kaitlyn encounters witches, mermaids, magic, and much more during her journey to find her destiny. This is a story that can be enjoyed by everyone; young and old, girl and boy. Svetlana is a talented author with a gift for storytelling that should be shared with the world.

Eleven-year-old Kaitlyn has a lot to deal with. Her parents disappeared out at sea on their boat two years ago. She is now cared for by her dueling grandmothers, neither of which are your storybook cookie-baking variety, no, they prefer deep sea-diving and rock climbing. And they hotly disagree about how to deal with Kaitlyn and her fears. Kaitlyn has a deep down fear of the sea. She will not even put a toe into the ocean. This fear leads to regular terrifying nightmares. Though Kaitlyn's fear seems irrational, sometimes what seems to be an irrational fear is anything but! This is certainly the case in Svetlana Kovalkova-McKenna's story. Kaitlyn and the Secrets of the Sea is a modern day fairy tale about magic, destiny and a whole world that exists deep under the sea. The presentation by one of her grandmothers of a magic sea flute which may be the answer to her fears about the sea, leads Kaitlyn down into a world of intrigue, mysterious characters, including a sea-boy named Tingo, (who annoys Kaitlyn as much as any land-based boy might) and twists and turns that will keep the reader turning the pages of this creative story right up to the end. I would recommend this exciting chapter book to readers from age eight to twelve.

Kaitlyn's Grandmother Jane gives her a sea flute that has a story. No, I'm not telling the flute's story, but it has to do with a blond girl who fears the water. Imagine Katilyn's surprise when she suddenly discovers she can breathe under water. She also has a choice to make: awaken the magical powers of the flute and become the Sea Witch's apprentice so she'll no longer haunt Kaitlyn's dreams, or wait until she's thirteen when the Sea Witch no longer has power over her. And who is Tingo, the Water Boy from the sea who claims he's Kaitlyn's Lord and Master? The Sea Witch, also known as Keeper of the Sea has her own problems, and Kaitlyn may be the answer. Or Tingo might be the one to help the Sea Witch. Ms. Kovalkova-McKenna has written a lovely story of magic and fantasy, good versus evil. Little twists and turns add neat surprises to the story and keep the reader guessing what will happen to Kaitlyn and Tingo next. Beautiful descriptions of sea life make the scenes come alive. Children and adults will enjoy entering the magical world created by the author.
