Overview

A battered box containing an odd assortment of mementoes encourages antiques dealer Reagan Bishop to step back in time. Her quest to learn Karyn Ritter's story results in modern day friendship and unexpected romance.

Desperate to escape a forced marriage, Karyn Ensinger flees Brandenberg, Germany, and travels to America in response to a plea for "German wives" for a group of lonely men in a place called Nebraska. At least, Karyn thinks, her husband will be someone she has chosen for herself. Married to a stranger, Karyn is horrified when she realizes Mikal Ritter expects her to live in what he calls a "sod house." Mud and heat, hail storms and rattlesnakes, prairie fires and desperate loneliness tempt Karyn to despair. She has just begun to believe her marriage of convenience has the potential to turn to love when the life she has worked so hard to build is threatened with destruction.

Wandering through the library's fiction section and looking for something to take home. I come upon Walks the Fire. I like the title and the back looks interesting. And I love it. So, I go back and see what other book my small library has by this author, and this one is there. I read it in one afternoon b/c even though I have stuff to do, I can not force myself to put this book down. The way the reader is on both sides of the story of Karyn and Mikal and knowing that they love eachother but don't know it, and everytime it's about ot come out something happens where it doesn't. By the end of the book, you think you'll explode if they don't just love eachother. It's breathtaking and beautiful and I cried when I was finished b/c I wasn't going to be a part of these people's lives anymore. I love how each chapter starts w/ a Bible verse. Stephanie Grace Whitson must be an incredible, loving, and God-fearing woman, and I respect her highly w/ out meeting her b/c I feel her through her writing. God Bless
