Farm to Table Stir Fry
Serves 8-10

I came up with this recipe on my own out of pure necessity! I wanted to know how to make a delicious stir fry but never found a recipe I liked. One day, in the middle of the summer, when fresh beautiful produce was aplenty, I decided to experiment. I started by combining the oil and soy sauce together and was really just winging it. At some point, Cara came into the kitchen. She saw what I was making and said, 'That needs sesame seeds' and kept walking. I added Cara's magical ingredient and our stir fry was born! I made the dish three times that week. We just couldn't get enough of it. . . .

½ cup soy sauce
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1½ pounds round steak, sliced thin
1 quart snow peas
½ head cabbage, slivered
½ bag baby carrots, quartered lengthwise
1 head broccoli, florets and stems, chopped small
8 scallions, whites and greens, chopped coarsely
1 red and 1 green pepper, sliced lengthwise
3 teaspoons sesame seeds
3 to 4 garlic cloves, minced
2 to 3 cups cooked brown or white rice

Mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, olive oil, and sesame oil together. Toss the mixture with the steak and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes.

Add all of the vegetables to the pan and sauté, turning occasionally until the vegetables are steamed but still firm in texture.

Add the sesame seeds and garlic and cook for 3 to 5 more minutes. Serve over rice.

Turkey, Corn, and White Bean Chili

Serves 10

Finished Product = Yum! This very flavor-packed soup was well received by my eight. In fact, on a scale of 1 to 10, it received a solid 8 from them. As for me, I didn't rate it, but I think my kids lost track of how many times I refilled my bowl. It's so delicious!

2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium red onion, finely diced
1 tablespoon minced garlic
½ cup of my Best Balsamic Vinaigrette (see page 101), or you
can use store-bought Italian or balsamic vinaigrette dressing
2 pounds ground turkey
3 cups chicken broth
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro, or 3 teaspoons dried cilantro
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil, or 2 teaspoons dried basil
2 tablespoons chili powder
¾ cup salsa
2 (15-ounce) cans great northern beans, undrained
2 (15-ounce cans) whole kernel corn, undrained
Salt and black pepper, to taste

Melt the butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté, stirring until tender. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.

Add the vinaigrette to the pan with the ground turkey; brown the turkey thoroughly. Once the turkey is cooked through, add the broth, cilantro, basil, chili powder, salsa, beans, corn, salt, and pepper.

Bring to a boil and then lower the heat to medium-low for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt and pepper, to taste, before serving. Serve with homemade cornbread.

This is a great recipe to make and freeze for another night!

Oh my, what a disappointment this book is. As are the comments professing the book is comprised of healthy, wonderful recipes. People need to open the book and read it with a critical and non-biased eye before writing a comment praising it. MANY of the food photos do not match the recipes and are completely misleading. MANY of the recipes use canned products which are high in sugar and sodium yet also call for additional salt. MANY of the recipes are incomplete or they are ambiguous in that they call for 1-2 tsp of salt or 3-4 C of flour. Which is it? Quantities such as these make huge differences in how recipes turn out. TOO MANY of the recipes call for processed foods when fresh ingredients are always more healthy and often cheaper than canned. MANY of the recipes are incomplete; ie: the times for baking are often omitted. MANY of the ingredients in the recipes are unbalanced; ie: too much flour to yeast for pizza dough or too much lemon juice in another or too much peanut butter to oatmeal in a cookie recipe. MANY of the recipes can be found on the back of the boxes or cans of ingredients called for in the recipes or on hundreds of sites on the internet. They're nothing new or exciting or creative. A recipe for broccoli? Really? Broccoli, butter, and garlic salt. Gosh, Kate, thank you - I don't think anyone would have thought of that on their own. I didn't just flip through the book, I took the time to read it and questioned what I was seeing. I used common sense. I would never recommend it for a beginning cook because there are dozens of more instructive books with much better photos and step by step instructions and which use healthy ingredients available for purchase online or in stores anywhere. If you're considering spending your money on a cookbook, this is the last one I'd recommend. If you want to buy this book because you're a fan who wants to see photos of the kids, then fine, but please don't mis-characterize your purchase as being for the healthy and wonderful recipes because this book is FAR from that.

I glanced at this cookbook, but can't buy it,everything is so unhealthy. I am a working mom and do not come home and open 3 plus cans of beans, or chili to put a decent supper on the table for 5 of us. She even ruins Swiss Steak. 3 Cans of cream of celery soup, each serving has 850 MG of Sodium, plus 2 Tablespoons of garlic salt. Kate doesn't seem to even know how to make a rue or a white sauce, she relies too heavily on canned products. Considering she claims to watch her money, each can of soup costs at least $1.50. You can start w/ a white sauce or gravy for pennies. I cannot imagine the sausage bake with baked beans and Italian sausage, doesn't sound appetizing. 2 cups of sausage is supposed to feed 8 - 10? 2 cups of sausage must be about 4 sausage links? I would think 9 and 13 year oldes could eat more than a sausage each. I rather put my money on fresh meats and veggies than on processed or canned items. Some grilled sausages, peppers, onions, side of rice would be much healthier and whipped up in half an hour. They must still be eating like toddlers or she is seriously leading an anorexic household. Notice the staged photo of the kids at the island. When Kate really does cook with the kids, she lines the counter tops with trash bags. Kate should have taken a cooking class before attempting to write a cook book.

I wouldn't even give this book a star, but I had to. You can tell that this book was written by an amateur. It looks like Kate went on the Internet and just picked recipes to put in a book. Anyone could do that. Kate is just grasping at straws to try and find ways to continue to put herself and her children in the public eye. This cookbook is going no where. The only people buying this book are Kate's obsessed fans. Kate just needs to go away and stop trying to exploit her children. Jon doesn't try to exploit the children. He has found a real job, and Kate should do the same thing.

Don't waste your money on this book. Recipes using canned soup that is very high in sodium, and box mixes is a joke. Any doctor that read this book would give several thumbs down. Kate is just trying to make money by writing this book because she knows that there is nothing more she can do. Her show is over, and she needs to get a real job to support her 8 children. The pictures of her children in the book are pictures that we have already seen. This book is a waste of paper, and it's sad to know that a tree had to die to write this book.

Seriously, this book is a joke. How it ever got published, is beyond me. This book was not proof read because there are errors  in it big time. Don't waste your money buying this book because you can get these simple recipes online. Kate is just trying whatever she can to make money so that she doesn't have to get a REAL job. It is just terrible that Kate continues to exploit her 8 children time after time.   .

The recipes are simply ones copied from the internet. There's nothing original here. In addition, a lot of the recipes call for canned soup or other high sodium additives (shoyu), which is extremely unhealthy. If Kate relies on canned soups and salty ingredients, she is no cook! Why such a cookbook got published is beyond me, and if I were interested in old photos of her kids, I could view them for free online. This is simply a former celebrity's vanity cookbook in a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the public eye. There was little thought or imagination put into this hastily churned-out joke of  a cookbook.

it seems like a lot of people are critiquing this book only based on who she is and not on the book itself. people are criticizing kate for editing errors that she most likely had nothing to do with. people also criticizing kate fro cooking and using products that the majority of the negative nellies here probably use. i think kate is doing an amazing job especially when you consider the father of those children does not contribute. and yes, i am fair in my review,as fair as the majority of those negative reviewers

I knew I would catch some flack from my husband for buying this book but I bought it anyway. I do cook for my family and have for years and I do incorporate as much fresh, organic food as my time and budget allows. We have a family of 5 so making enough is always a challenge. I bought this book for more inspiration than anything else knowing Kate from watching her show I felt we share the same type of thoughts on food. I do find that the pictures, such as her turkey stock, does not actually match the recipe which is odd and feel the editor of this book is more at fault than anyone. I will say I have found recipes that I will try and use my own judgment, as I'm sure any cook can handle, to tweak and change to adjust to my families liking. So yes, if you want to find a little added inspiration, look for it where you feel you can find it. To bad mouth anyone who has the opportunity to publish a book seems petty. Plus I have always had a problem with people calling for Kate to get a "real" job, how is being a Mom not as "real" as it gets? What she does has no impact on my life so I honestly don't care. I just have an issue with people who disrespect people who choose to stay home with their kids, Dads or Moms, maybe more people should look at themselves and their children and decide it's more important to raise their own children instead of working a "real" job and leaving the raising to daycare. Children are more important than the big house or the second car and if your willing to sacrifice these things, the rewards far out way any other career.

This book is the worst cookbook ever. I believe that it was written by the kids. There are so many errors in it. The recipes call for canned soups, which are very high in sodium. The only thing this book should be used for is starting a fire in the fireplace. The recipes don't even match the pictures. Kate must have paid the publisher to print this book, because it is the trashiest of trash. .

MONEY IS IN THE MIX...along with high sodium. After previewing this in a local bookstore, my impression is this "cookbook" was nothing more than a money-making vehicle for Ms Gosselin that was hastily churned out, as there are several sloppy editing errors, along with mismatched photos. The premise for a Kate Gosselin "cookbook" lacks credibility--I've read articles where she has been quoted as saying she feeds only organic foods to her kids, so for me to believe her kids have eaten these recipes filled with non-organic, high-sodium, MSG-laced ingredients is difficult to swallow. No pun intended... Many of the recipes require high-sodium ingredients such as canned soup or shoyu, which I would NOT want to feed to my son. Cooking from cans is not my idea of a cookbook, and if I wanted to cook that way, I can order one of Campbell's cookbooks here on Barnes & Noble. At least their cookbooks are proofread, the recipes tested, and attractively and professionally presented. If Kate has to rely on high-sodium, MSG-laced ingredients in her recipes for flavoring, I have to question her qualifications to author a cookbook in the first place. There wasn't anything new, creative or imaginative in this "cookbook", just very basic recipes that you can easily find on the internet; her recipes appear to be copied verbatim from recipe-sharing websites. Some of her recipes were vague on the quantity of ingredients, which indicates how amateurish this publishing endeavor was. I have yet to see a GOOD cookbook where several recipes do not list the exact amount for ingredients, so it appears there was no "testing" of these recipes. This "cookbook" seems to be rehashed internet recipes along with rehashed old photos of her kids. It is a sordid attempt to stay relevant in the public eye and clearly a last-gasp attempt to cash in on the Gosselin name.

I WANTED to like it, I really did! I used to watch Jon & Kate Plus Eight and thought the show was really cute. So, while browsing the cookbooks in my B&N this morning, I stumbled across this one and was so surprised to see it. I decided to look through it because it must have some great family dinner recipes. Well, not really. There aren't any new, creative, or unique recipes in this book. It's all stuff we've all seen a million times, like chili, casseroles, pork chops, meatballs, spaghetti sauce, meatloaf, etc. Yawn. All the same recipes that have been in cookbooks for decades and are online by the millions. So, still looking for something useful, I read through some of Kate's tips. Sadly, nothing new there. I doubt anyone needs advice like clean off splatters from the cabinets as you're cooking rather than letting the grime build up. Or use coupons, but only for products you would normally buy anyway. Cook extra so you can have a leftovers night. Make sure you actually use or cook all the food you buy so you don't waste it. Seriously, this is the level of her "tips". Oh well, I decided not to waste my money on this book. It's not a cookbook at all. Rather, it's a thinly veiled effort to sell another book of her children's photos, mostly old photos, and some new ones. Very strange, if you ask me. I'm quite surprised anyone even published this book. Someone's going to lose a lot of money on this one.

I'm not sure who wrote most of the negative reviews on this and Amazon but, I actually bought the book, and I actually cook. MOST of the recipes I use, whether Kate's or someone else's, include ingredients from a can. Most working moms don't have time for ALL things made from scratch, you know? There are pictures accompanying each recipe, whether it's food or family- that's how most cookbooks are- and while I would like to see what the finished product should look like, the truth is, it usually doesn't look exactly like the picture- of ANY cookbook. What I want are tasty, healthy, fairly easy recipes to make for my children, and this is what you will find in this cookbook. If you don't like Kate Gosselin, I find it hard to believe you would waste money on her cookbook, or time bad-mouthing it. I give Kate so much credit when it comes to these things. Its simple recipes anyone can follow and she doesn't pretend to be a chef which most of us aren't. Recipes are affordable and kid friendly which is what her goal would be I assume since she cooks for 8 kids. This woman has done anything and everything to support her kids financially and emotionally. She should be doing public speaking and writing a book on how to support 8 kids. The Octo-mom was criticized for doing it on public assistance and Kate criticized for writing a cookbook that includes too much soy sauce. Great job Kate! Keep up the recipes for mom's like me on the go and need to feed my kids economically, sensibly, and without having the culinary craft of Martha!

This is a GREAT book with simple recipes for a large family. I think there are a lot of haters posting reviews who have never even read the book. Their comments are too similar and they all want to be ANONYMOUS.

Just wanted to say buyer beware. If you go through the post you will notice that some of the reviews are written by one person. I have not seen the book but plan too. Who ever is this person that posted "Anonymous" on 09/14/2013 has a major problem with this. I am making my own decision....
