Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Meet Katie Woo. She is an Asian American six year old, in first grade, and has a little gray cat named Sweet Pea, with whom she likes to cuddle. Together with her friends Pedro and JoJo, Katie enjoys riding the school bus, playing in the park, and going camping. But even Katie Woo has a bad day once in a while. This title follows Katie through four different stories that make her scared, nervous, and sad. But with her friends and family by her side, the adventures become fun and she learns to cope with unpleasant situations. Part of an award-winning series for young readers, the stories in this title include: A Nervous Night, Too Much Rain, Moving Day, and Katie Woo Has the Flu. Beautiful watercolor illustrations, short sentences, paragraphs with simple text on white backgrounds, and the thin book size make this a good choice for students transitioning to chapter books. A table of contents is included as are a recipe and craft activity at the end. The entire series consists of more than thirty titles supported by free online resources available from the publisher including a downloadable scrapbook as well as stationery, recipes, coloring pages, pictures and more. The series is a good resource for discussions regarding fictitious characters, family life, growing up, friendship, social issues, and cultural diversity. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid

Meet the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; The Tushy Book; The Belly Book; and Big Girl Panties. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved Mac computerin New York City, without the help of her two naughty cats, Chaim and Goldy.

Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.
