Overview

Keb Darge & Little Edith's Legendary Wild Rockers, Vol. 3

Scottish DJ, crate digger, and deep funk impresario Keb Darge returned with co-curator Little Edith for Vol. 3 of their Legendary Wild Rockers series, offering up 20 tracks of obscure early rock & roll, rockabilly, and rudimentary surf selections from the '50s and early '60s. "Wild" is the word of the day on these compilations, as they present some of the least polished, most feral early rock & roll rhythms this side of the Trashmen, and the third volume finds a flow that suggests the roots of garage and surf in their most primordial stages. Tracks like the Shindigs' "Thunder Reef" find themselves in the confused space between rockabilly roots and the beachy rhythms of early surf, with production and co-writing credit going to a young Bobby Fuller. Gene Maltais' spare rockabilly jaunt "The Raging Sea" manages to sound feverish in its emptiness, with vocals and one-string guitar riffs making up much of the song's powerful backbone. The lines between early hillbilly rock, surf, and exotica blur throughout Legendary Wild Rockers, Vol. 3, as bizarro instrumentals like Joe Lee's "Hang-Out" and obtuse rockabilly blasts like Marlon "Madman" Mitchell and the Rocketeers' "Ice Cold Baby" sit next to each other well, unified in their breathless presentation and brilliantly raw fidelity. Darge and Little Edith have clearly mastered the art of both selection and sequencing, as the compilation bops along with all the jumbled abandon of a sleazy beach party. It's easy to forget that the selections here are super-rare collector's items of a mostly invisible history of rockabilly and early surf. Ultimately, what comes through is the sense of youthful fun that the artists on the comp clearly felt when making the music and the curators had in unearthing it.
