About the Author

While growing up, Alfie learned valuable lessons from his mother about money. Life wasn't always easy for his mom, Sandy. She lost her parents at the tender age of 11 and was raised mostly by her older sister, Aunt Pat, in Miami Beach.
By the time Sandy turned 15, she fell in love, got married and moved to California. The next year, she and her husband had a beautiful daughter, Toni, and, 17 months later, Alfie. When Alfie was only 5, Sandy packed up Toni and Alfie in the middle of the night and left California. They traveled back to Aunt Pat's in Florida, where Sandy raised her children as a single mother.
Money was very tight. Sandy worked hard as a waitress, trying to make ends meet. They moved in and out of different apartments and different schools. Sometimes the utilities were turned off because there wasn't enough to pay the bills.
By the time Alfie was in fourth grade, his mom made the hardest decision of her life: She moved the children to the Florida Methodist Children's Home. It provided the structure and stability that Toni and Alfie needed. They did their chores and went to church. They flew back to California one last time to see their dad just before he passed away of lung cancer.
Although these were difficult times for this young family, there was never a shortage of love! Sandy taught her children compassion and hard work. To this day, she would do anything to protect and love her family. She taught Alfie to not give up and to have amazing faith to get through hard times.
Alfie and his wife, Tommie, faithfully read the Bible. There is a special verse that reminds him of the many blessings he has experienced in his life.
Philippians 4:12 - "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want."
