Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Plenty of boys and girls love soccer and there are mixed teams that compete just like Little League for baseball. The "Soccer Cats" series has been created to appeal to all those soccer players. Each book features several of the players and real life problems. In this chapter book Alan accidentally kicks one of his teammates and she has to go to the hospital to get stitches. He is traumatized and she is not as upset as he is, but it has an impact on his ability to play the game. The story features a bully named Brant who teases a number of the kids on the team, but he also has a real friend who helps him recognize what he is doing wrong and helps him overcome his fear of kicking the ball. It all ends very tidily and while there is no great suspense, the story of basic decency and friendship and the clever way that they get a bit of revenge on Brant will give most kids a chuckle. The stories present positive messages and should resonate with the target audience. Black and white sketches are sprinkled throughout and add humor in their depictions of kids with slightly exaggerated facial features. Number ten in the series that still bears the name of Matt Christopher. 2003, Little Brown, Ages 7 to 9.
