The Fabulous Thunderbirds, the house-rockin' band that blasted out of Texas with Chicago blues on its mind, has spawned numerous solo careers, including those of the group's founders, guitarist Jimmie Vaughan and harp player and singer Kim Wilson. The group's current guitarist is Kid Ramos, a Californian who wears a pompadour hairdo and retro clothing. But it isn't his cool sartorial style that wows crowds, it's his playing. Ramos's self-titled CD is a hefty, 15-cut set that showcases his wide-ranging chops, from the electrified T-Bone Walker-ish country blues flash on Little Milton's "Dead Love" to the chilly frills of Albert Collins on the original instrumental, "Cold Chicken and Beer," with plenty of stirring stops in between. Several high-profile vocalists join the stinging guitarist. Wilson, whose voice has gotten sweeter with age, sings on the rockin' "Dead Love" and the big band blues ballad "Open Up Your Heart"; Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos gives "Three Hundred Pounds of Joy" the Howlin' Wolf vocal treatment; and Willie Chambers of the Chambers Brothers adds some soulful strut to "Leave Me Alone." James Harmon, with whom Ramos played as a teenager, also adds his sleek touch on both vocals and harmonica throughout. But it's the host, not the guests, that makes KID RAMOS such a lively party. Ramos has taken the California blues guitar style of the '70s and '80s back to the roots and recharged it with fresh approaches. Let's hope this Kid never grows up.
