OMG. She did it again. Lauren Carr has created another romantic suspense mystery that had me reading, ignoring my hubby and my mother, unable to put it down until the last page was read. Killer in the Band is A Lovers in Crime Mystery that is chock full of wonderful characters, both human and animal. Her ability to bring them all to life is amazing. I laughed and cried, because she made me do it. I cannot pick a favorite character. They are all amazing in their own way. It took me a little while to figure out the culprit(s). Even the bad guys have their reasons for doing for what they do and I could empathize with them…for a moment or two. BUT nothing justifies taking a life. There is more than one mystery that will have to be solved and more than one villain. I felt so bad for both of them and that is when I know I have read a fantastic story. Lauren does have a way of springing surprises on me that have my jaw hanging open, thinking, I sure didn’t see that one coming. The animals…I just don’t know what to say. Some people do seem to have a special ability making it seem as if they talk to them. I do not want to spoil anything, but…have you ever looked in your critters eyes and wondered what they are really thinking? The characters have trust issues that take time to work through, making it read like real life. I want to tell them…to be a go between and explain things, but that is not my place. I am just a spectator in this complicated story. My emotions were high and low, happy and sad, and I was left with a good feeling when all was said and done. I WANT MORE!!!!!!! I received a copy of Killer in the Band from Lauren Carr.

Killer in the Band is author Lauren Carr’s latest mystery with the Thornton’s. Joshua and Cameron are settling into their newly restructured life with adopted daughter Izzy and Joshua’s youngest son Donny. J.J., oldest son and twin to Murphy, comes back home to study for his bar exam, unfortunately tensions are still high between him and Cameron his step-mother. Add to that an old flame steps back into his life, and she stirs up more conflict between father and son as she is twice J.J’s age. Suellen has a secret, though and wants only to share that with J.J. Much to his father and step-mother’s dismay, J.J. and Suellen rekindle their relationship. Lauren’s trademark animal characters and their antics are back and with new ones as Suellen owns a large farm and orchard. The horses and the rooster became endearing sidekicks that gave lighthearted moments and humor to this rather intense murder mystery- not one but two murder mysteries. I am glad for the critters as this story seemed darker than the others I have read and sometimes I just needed a breather. Having two mysteries to solve has detective Cameron on her toes and at odds with step-son J.J. as both surround Suellen and her life. We also meet other characters, Poppy a somewhat horse whisperer and Noah a mysterious young man. Ms. Carr’s mysteries are well developed and include intricate timelines and a whole host of people, but what I really like is that her stories are written so that I am never at a loss as to what is going on. This book shines with that ability as two timelines and mysteries are progressing at the same rapid rate and I was caught up in both. Her characters, both human and animal, also keep the story flowing with their distinct personalities and it was like watching a movie in my mind. Again the ever helpful cast of characters at the beginning of the book was present and I so appreciate that extra effort and information on the author’s part. There is some crude language sprinkled throughout, and like Joshua, I was uncomfortable with J.J.’ s relationship. Other than that I enjoyed this next edition in the Lovers in Crime Mystery series. I received this book free of charge from the author or publisher. I was not required to give a positive review and the views expressed are my own.

This book blow my mind away Wow! I am still speechless after I finished reading this book. Ms. Lauren Carr blow my mind away with this story. I thought I figured out the killer, oh boy! was I wrong. This story will amazed you breathlessly. It is oh so good. If you are a music lover like me, no doubt you cannot put this book down. Gosh! I spent many late hours reading this book. I even wake up early morning and finished what pages I left off. This book is hard to put it down.

I have to admit, this book was a little slow for me, but there were quite a few twists and turns that kept me reading. And when we all started to put the pieces together; I definitely felt like things sped up. I have read a Lauren Carr book in past that introduced me to the characters so I was familiar with the main characters involved (Joshua, Cameron, and Izzy with mention of JJ and his siblings.) There were a few different ‘mystery plots’ in the book. The re-opened cold case of a murder; the murder of a ranch hand’s wife; a teenager who appears out of nowhere; a mysterious horse handler; a murder that occurs in the midst of everything; a character with dementia; finding the members of the band; two more murders – a whole swarm of going on’s. With all that is happening and all the characters in the book; it definitely put an interesting spin on trying to figure out who did what. While I felt the story itself was slow, the mystery of it all was great and kept me sucked in trying to figure out who was guilty. If you enjoy a good mystery, this will definitely be one that you enjoy!

I can't put into words how much I loved this book! When I was given the opportunity to read I said 'Yes' as fast as I could to make the blog tour. And I wasn't disappointed. Killer had me from page one and would not let me go! This story is the 3rd book in the Lovers In Crime Series. There are lots of characters and multiple story lines in each of the books I've read by La;uren at least that is what she did in the Mac Faraday series which BTW is great too. Killer was no different. There was Joshua and Cameron Thornton and all their children. The story was mainly about the oldest son J.J. who had just returned home from college. He had intended a leisurely summer studying for his Bar exam. The summer ended up being much more than everyone bargained for. J.J. happened (at least so it seemed) to run into Sue Ellen Russell a woman yes I said woman who had mentored him in high school. They fell in love back in the day but each went their separate ways. When J.J. returns their affair is rekindled. J.J. ends up moving into the family horse and orchard farm that Sue Ellen has inherited from her parents. Together they begin the daily operations of the horse farm. Trouble simmers in the background when (dad) Joshua . . . let's just say he isn't happy with the couple. But Cameron (the step mom) convinces him to visit J.J. and Sue Ellen. Taking along the younger children Izzy (an adopted child) and Donny (Joshua's 16 year old who can't stay out of the kitchen he eats everything in sight). The friendly visit which includes pie puts everyone at ease while Izzy makes friends with dogs, cats and a rooster that no one likes. I was in love let me tell you! Sue Ellen drops a bomb on Cameron who is a Homicide Detective and asks her to investigate the murder of an ex band member. Which everyone is surprised when Dylan Matthews is found some 30 years after being murdered. Back at the ranch Sue Ellen is overwhelmed with the daily operations and begins looking for someone to manage the horse operation. In comes 'horse whisperer' Poppy Ashburn a mysterious woman who has every horse following her like a puppy dog within a few minutes. Izzy who is getting out of bed early and begging to go to the barn is following Poppy around and begging for a horse of her own. If your a regular reader of my blog you know why this story line got me. I loved the ranch setting. As usual Lauren does have multiple story lines going on. There are a few dead bodies included in the mix. It's a fantastic read. I do have one caution I have to add for my readers that might think about allowing a younger adult or teen read this book. There is a part in the middle of the story. A witness involved in the cold crime has an alternative lifestyle that possibly might offend some people. I only include this as a caution. I would read the book and discuss this before allowing a teen to read. Killer In The Band is probably my favorite of all the books I've read by Lauren Carr. I look forward to reading more! This book deserves my 5 star rating!
