For nine years and three hundred and sixty-four days, the Young Mansion in Maine is an ordinary home. The room that remains locked always is quiet except on the first day of a new decade. A sacrifice of a family member must be made so every ten years a lottery is held and the selected one is left inside the room. This has been going on since 1930 with everyone who spent time in the room dead except for one survivor. Since the room is locked, the other family members assume the people commit suicide except for that one female who lived, but her mind was fried and spent four decades inside a padded cell. The patriarch Howard Young hires former FBI Agent Carolyn Cartwright who has dealt with supernatural cases to find a way to break the curse. Carolyn knows her first step is to learn what happened in 1930 in that room and the second step is to pray she and the Young family survive the truth. Readers will thoroughly enjoy the locked room mystery inside a haunted house tale reminiscent of early King and Koontz. There is a steady growing tension as the answers to the cause percolates, but the solution seems to never boil to the surface. John Manning provides the audience with a chilling tale as the heroine knows there is only one way to learn the truth. Harriet Klausner

Loved this book! Couldn't put it down. Family curse forces family to hold a lottery to draw a family member's name to spend the night in a basement where he/she may not survive the night. Didn't give a 5-star rating because when the killer was ridiculous.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. It kept my attention and I didn't want to put it down. Book similiar to the style of Dean Koontz, which I love... would recommend anyone reading, who likes to be held captive to a book.

Not my typical reading pick but I'm glad I decided to read it. It was an interesting story that wasn't too cliched like most horror novels.

but at least it had a plot! The plot was stretched a bit thin in places, but still, it kept me guessing and trying to figure out the ending before I had read that far. I am of the opinion that the first part of the book was better than the last. I just wasn't crazy about the sensless gore toward the end. However, it was easy to read and understand. It caught my attention and held it. There were some editorial errors (at one point the characters sat on a 'soda' instead of a 'sofa') and there seemed to be more toward the end

I didn't know what to expect from this book when i bought it but now i'm glad I did. It held my interest and was a fantastic read. There are alot of characters but i found it wasn' t hard to keep up with them. I would recommend this book to anyone. You won't be disappointed.

I couldn't put this book down. A great read, even though thrillers are not generally my favorite genre.

At times predictable, but still very suspenseful. Most of the characters are pretty flat and one-dimensional. The story line though is very interesting and kept me hooked until the end

At first I was skeptical of reading this book, but then I saw on the front cover of the book. It said If you like Dean Koontz our like John Manning. I was hooked lol. So I gave this author a try!!! Hands down!!! This book is Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Anne Rice, Jack Ketchum and Clive Barker all in one book. This book is creepy, funny, interesting, spooky, and scarey. This was one of those books that you begin reading and just can't put down. I was completely captivated and was kept at the edge of my seat all the way to the end! This was a great surprise and I look forward to reading more from this author.
