Killing Secrets by K.L. Docter

Some secrets are better left dead.

Rachel James' ex-husband is released from prison determined to reclaim her and her little girl -- the child is his key to controlling the James fortune. Frightened, Rachel flees to Denver with the child who hasn't uttered a word since her daddy went to prison.

Contractor Patrick Thorne wants nothing to do with another of his parents' charity cases. He failed his own wife so abysmally she took her own life as well as his unborn son's. After two years, it's time to concentrate on the bid he's won and the saboteur trying to destroy his construction firm.

There is no room for trust in either of their hearts. But trust is all that will untangle the secrets that dominate their lives, free a little girl of her silent prison, and save them all from a serial killer who stands too close.

About the Author

Karen/K.L. Docter writes two different kinds of romance novels....

Romantic Suspense w/a K.L. Docter: Women hunted by killers...men who'd die to protect them.

Contemporary Romance w/a Karen Docter: Romance...With a Kick of Humor!

Karen's contemporaries are cute & spicy romances. She loves writing about real men and women with dreams and goals that don't allow for a relationship just so she can throw them in each other's path...with a tickle and a smile.

Her romantic suspense novels (as K.L. Docter) are also filled with romance, although the dangers the hero and heroine face are intense, usually because a serial killer is bent on ending one or both of their lives before they can fall in love.

Karen's an award winning author, a four-time Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart® finalist, and won the coveted Kiss of Death Romance Writers Daphne du Maurier Award Category (Series) Romantic Mystery Unpublished division.

When she's not saving her characters from death and destruction or helping them fall in love, she loves camping and fishing with her family, reading, gardening & cooking. If she can do most of those things over a campfire, all the better!

I highly recomend this book, it has a story line you will want to follow, enough charecters for a great story but not so many you  get lost trying to follow it! You will love this book!

Rachel James thought she was free and clear until her abusive husband manages to get out of jail LONG before expected. She hears of his release, heads to a “safe place” while trying to keep herself and her traumatized daughter (Amanda) safe and when confronted by her ex has Patrick Thorne step in to defend her. This is not the run of the mill hunk defending a damsel in distress but a book filled with twists and turns, more than one bad guy, a serial killer that is mean and deadly, hunks aplenty and a resolution that is satisfying. A great stand alone book that left me wondering what the rest of Thorne’s Thorns will get up to as the series progresses?

Wow, what a great book! This is the first of the author's suspense novels I have read and I couldn't put it down. This book had it all, read in one go, with just a short break for sustenance! I loved the Thorne family and I really fell for Rachel and her daughter Amanda and felt for the trauma they had been through. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

This is my first book by K. L. Docter, but it certainly won't be the last. Suspense at every turn! Just when I thought I had it all figured out...another plot twist. Rachel and Patrick together are sizzling! I couldn't put this book down. I'm looking forward to reading Book 2 in this series. *I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Killing Secrets may be many things, but boring certainly isn’t one of them. Once author K.L. Docter’s tortuous tale of romantic suspense gets going, it seems like some new twist or turn is always lurking around the next corner, waiting to throw the reader for a loop. At the center of the story is Rachel, a desperate abused wife, and her daughter Amanda, both on the run from their abusive husband/father. Add to the mix Patrick, a grieving widower whose pregnant wife committed suicide, and unexpected sparks of passion soon begin to fly. Complicating their burgeoning love affair, though, is a series of increasingly deadly events – but is Rachel’s husband behind the evil deeds? Or could another, even more evil party be responsible? With all that happens in such a short period time, Killing Secrets has the potential to confuse some readers; however, Docter does a commendable job of interweaving enough suspense and mystery to pique the interest without distracting from the flow of the central story line. Furthermore, the characters are well put together and possess more than enough appeal to hold the reader’s interest until the very end. While there could have been more romance to go with the suspense (of which there’s plenty), Killing Secrets stands well on its own as an intriguing tale sure to leave readers wanting more. An enjoyable read. Payton Reed Apex Reviews

This is my first time reading one K.L. Doctor’s books and I’ve found another favorite author! I couldn’t put the book down!!! Who doesn’t love Suspense with Romance? Rachel James is on the run with her daughter Amanda trying to find a place to hide after the FBI messed up and released her abusive, lying ex-husband after she put him in prison. She ends up in Denver now not only worrying about her ex finding her, but now she is in the direct path of a serial killer bent on revenge. Patrick Thorne after losing his wife and unborn child he never wants to marry again. He owns Thorne Enterprise and has been dealing with what he thinks is vandalism, which soon progresses into something much worse. A serial killer set out to destroy him for taking what the killer thought was his. However, he made a promise to his parents to keep an eye on the beauty and her daughter from a distance. After her ex shows up, he knows he must protect them at all costs. Will the police find her ex in time and will the killer be caught and brought to justice? I cannot wait for the next book in the Thorne's Thorns series! Which brother will she write next?

Be careful when you start to read this one - Killing Secrets by K.L. Docter is one of very few books in my fifty plus years of reading that I've been unable to put down. The characters pull you into the story and the plot twists keep you there. A great blend of romance and suspense with a whole lotta intrigue and action for good measure. I'd strongly recommend Killing Secrets and can't wait for the next book in the series

Killing Secrets by K.L. Docter is the 1st book in her new series, Thorn’s Thorne. Killing Secrets is a mystery suspense romantic thriller from beginning to end. Rachel James is our heroine, and she has been hiding from an abusive ex-husband, who has recently been released from jail. Now Rachel is on the run, taking her young daughter to Denver to be under the protection of the Thorne family. Rachel knows she cannot stay too long in one place, as her ex always finds them, and when he does he will either kill her or kidnap her daughter. Young Amanda has not spoken a word since her father was put in jail for badly beating up his wife, as well as a friend of hers. Patrick Thorne is our hero, who himself has a number of issues, becomes Rachel’s protector. In between keeping his promise to keep an eye on Rachel and her daughter, Amanda; Patrick is trying to work with his brother Jack to find out who is sabotaging his business. There is a killer on the loose, called the Angel Killer, who seems to be targeting Patrick. Both Rachel and Patrick immediately find themselves attracted to each other. But both do not want anything romantic to develop. Rachel has no intention of staying in Denver for long, and does not want to endanger those who help her from her psychotic ex-husband. Patrick has still not gotten over the tragedy of his wife killing herself, and somehow feels responsible. What follows is an exciting, tense story where Rachel’s life is in danger quite often, as Greg the ex-husband finds her. The Angel Killer is also close by, and no one knows who or why. In the middle of these scary scenes of danger, Rachel and Patrick can no longer deny their feelings for each other, and their relationship becomes one that will have you rooting for them. There is great chemistry between them, and it sizzles; but death, destruction and betrayal threatens to destroy them, with so many twists and turns along the way. I do not want to give spoilers, other than to say this was a thrill a minute, with a lot of action, and excitement. Will Rachel be able to stop Greg, her ex? Who is the Angel Killer and why is he targeting Patrick? Will young Amanda ever talk again? Will Rachel & Patrick be able to survive and stay together? You will have to read this book to find out. K.L Docter has written a fabulous story in Killing Secrets that has everything: nonstop action, suspense, excitement, great characters, and a wonderful hot couple.

K.L. Docter (Karen Docter) has struck gold with her latest book Killing Secrets (Thorne’s Thorns). In a nutshell Killing Secrets is a tale about love and betrayal, mysteries and lies, hate and revenge, murders, boy (reluctantly) meets girl and a very big melting pot bringing everything to an inevitable climax. If you’re looking for a good holiday read, where you can relax by the pool – well, sitting on the edge of your sun-lounger - I definitely recommend Killing Secrets.  Going on an adventure holiday? You’ll get nowhere because once you start this book you won’t put it down! The thing I loved about K.L. Docter’s writing style is that she writes in a way that allows her to showcase the strength and beauty of both family and love within the book. I absolutely adored both main characters, Rachel and Patrick with my heart melting for Rachel’s daughter Amanda. Reading Killing Secrets was like watching a train wreck but not in slow motion – this read is fast-paced, full of suspense and a roller coaster ride of emotions for both you and the characters. You feel it isn’t going to end well for the characters and you’re on the edge of your seat waiting for the inevitable which will change the characters’ lives forever. This is the first time I’ve read a K.L. Docter book but it won’t be the last. This book has a strong storyline with excellent characters, great suspense and reluctant romance. Killing Secrets appealed to me on several levels, highly recommended for lovers of this genre.

Rachel James is on the run. Her ex is a sadistic creep who has damaged Rachel and her daughter beyond words. When the ex blows up a fertility clinic, Rachel knows she's in trouble and flees to a family friend in Denver. Hot contractor Patrick Thorne is grieving the loss of his wife and unborn child, but he won't let anyone mess with Rachel. Protectiveness turns to heat...! The pace was a little slow at times, but overall a great read with a surprise twist at the end. I was given an advance copy of this for an honest review.

This book was an exciting mix of romance and thrilling suspense. I loved every second of it – as the twisted web of lies and deceit slowly unravelled; page for page, chapter for chapter.   There were so many secrets and half-truths within the pages of this book, and each character was so amazingly defined, with a multitude of layers that were just waiting to be peeled away. From Rachel’s life on the run from her crazy ex, to the devastating lies she’d been led to believe regarding the child she protected with her life. And then there was Patrick, still getting over the guilt and anguish of losing his wife and unborn child, to the occurrences that threatened to destroy his business, as well as the tie in with serial killer. Patrick was an amazing man. It was refreshing to crack open a book that had a genuinely good guy as the hero. He may have been a bit unsure at times, and his reluctance to get involved with Rachel made him act irrationally every now and then, but he was sweet, and caring, and just so wonderful that it melted my heart. The romance that grew between Patrick and Rachel was slow but passionate. Patrick was even amazing with Amanda – and who doesn’t love a man who can interact with children? Especially a child who was as withdrawn as Rachel’s sweet little girl. I loved Patrick the minute he stepped onto the pages of this book, but when he softened at the moments he engaged with Amanda I was done for; and it was obvious a connection grew between them, just as strong as the one that developed between him and Rachel. This book was never boring, and I was riveted, on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen next. Expect the unexpected because this book was not predictable in any way. There were times when I had to wonder if what was happening was the result of Greg’s obsession with Rachel and Amanda, or the work of the Angel Killer. This story was complex, and the many intertwining subplots kept it exciting throughout.

I really enjoyed this book. There was always something going on, keeping you going. I was guilty of "just one more chapter" more than one night. The characters were great & believable. I love books with fun siblings! So happy to see there will be more. It'll be a series I follow for sure.

A woman on the run from an abusive husband; a serial killer haunting Denver. Blackmail! Murder! Let’s put it this way…when this Docter is in the house, don’t count on things in a story being even close to safe!

Killing Secrets (Thorne's Thorns, #1) by Karen Docter Rachel James and her daughter are running from her ex husband who was just released from prison. She goes to Denver where she is protected by the Thorne family. Patrick Thorne takes Rachel under his wing. Both have secrets in their past that bleed into the present. Neither one is very trusting. Add to it Rachels' daughter hasn't spoken since the day her father went to prison. Will Rachel and Patrick be able to cope with their pasts? Will Rachel finally find safety and peace? A fast paced romantic thriller with likable characters and a lot of secrets and surprises. I really enjoyed Killing Secrets and feel those who love thriller-Romance will enjoy it as well.

Wow! Much more than your average woman-in-jeopardy story. This thriller has chilling bad guys, a hero you wish you knew in real life, a heroine to root for, and a little girl (and giant Mastiff!) who steal your heart. Well-written with a host of believable characters who all seem to have a secret. The subplot threads add extra layers and connect in the end for a satisfying read. A real page-turner that carries through to the end. This is the first in a series that I highly anticipate because of the top notch writing, multi-layered plots and characters who live beyond the last page. You can trust K.L.Docter to deliver a superb story!
