Whether you want to lose weight, get healthy, or help save the world, transitioning to a vegan diet is easy with advice, tips, and recipes from actress Alicia Silverstone.

In The Kind Diet, actress, activist, and committed conservationist Alicia Silverstone shares the insights that encouraged her to swear off meat and dairy forever, and outlines the spectacular benefits of adopting a plant-based diet, from effortless weight loss to clear skin, off-the-chart energy, and smooth digestion. She explains how meat, fish, milk, and cheese—the very foods we've been taught to regard as the cornerstone of good nutrition—are actually the culprits behind escalating rates of disease and the cause of dire, potentially permanent damage to our ecology.

Yet going meat- and dairy-free doesn't mean suffering deprivation; to the contrary, The Kind Diet introduces irresistibly delicious food that satisfies on every level—it even includes amazing desserts to keep the most stubborn sweet tooth happy. Alicia also addresses the nutritional concerns faced by many who are new to a plant-based diet, and shows how to cover every nutritional base, from protein to calcium and beyond.

Whether your goal is to drop a few pounds, boost your energy and metabolism, or simply save the world, Alicia provides the encouragement, the information, and the tools you need to make the transition to a plant-based diet deliciously empowering.

The title: The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet, by Alicia Silverstone, says it all. The plant-based diet, according to Silverstone (and a few doctors quoted) will improve your health, help prevent disease, improve the environment and help you lose weight. The book begins with Silverstone's personal story. It includes her early attempts at not eating meat, and an unhealthy period when she ate only raw foods. Then the book discusses the "nasty foods"--meat, dairy, white sugar and processed foods. We learn the many reasons these foods are unhealthy, bad for the planet and bad for animal's welfare. Next, we learn what the "kind foods" are--notably, whole grains, new proteins, veggies and healthy desserts. There is a chapter on nutritional FAQ's. Silverstone gets we are not all ready for a vegan diet, especially if we are used to a diet heavy in meats, dairy and processed foods. So, she presents three levels: flirting, vegan and superhero. In flirting, she makes recommendations like: go to a vegetarian restaurant and order a dish, buy some vegan products from her "Transitional Food Chart", and simply recommends we start adding vegan meals into our diets. In vegan, she presents a plan on how to build a meal and a vegan meal plan. Finally, the superhero level is loosely based on the macrobiotic diet (minus fish,) and features fresh, local and seasonal fare. Silverstone adds helpful tips, like chew your food really well, what to do about detoxing and cravings and more. There is a chapter on tips when away from home. Lifestyle tips is a very short chapter, mentioning things like the importance of reusing and buying secondhand. She recommends the book, THE ECO CHICKS GUIDE TO LIFE: HOW TO BE FABULOUSLY GREEN, for natural cleaning and personal products--and, I agree--a good book. I would also recommend HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET to learn how to make your entire home green and beautiful for optimal health. The book concludes with fantastic looking recipes (I'm a pretty good cook, I can always tell.) The recipes are divided into vegan and superhero. Even if you are not committed to a full time vegan diet, I highly recommend this book--just start with the flirting and see where it takes you.

This is an excellent book! I say that as a fitness professional, nutritional counselor, and just as an interested reader. I like that Alicia provides different levels for different people, and/or for people at different levels themselves. This is a book that helps the reader to really prepare and execute on a life-changing diet. I will definitely be recommending this to some of my training clients! I personally am not trying to remove all meat from my diet, but when I do want to remove it from meals, this is a great resource book! The other one that I always recommend is: Build Your Mind, Your Body Will Follow. Every client gets a copy from me--that is how strongly I feel about it. Check it out too!

This is a very easy read. It was full of good information. I am already a vegetarian ad this book has given me the motivation to take it to the next level and become a vegan. Good recipes also. The only downside I found to the book is some of the recipes have ingredients that I can't seem to find anywhere so I haven't been able to make a few of them.

I got my hands on this book today...days before it is suppose to hit shelves. I read the entire book tonight. I went meat free a week ago and I have been dairy and egg free for days now as well. I was really really looking forward to this book as a way of encouragement to keep with it. IT DID NOT LET ME DOWN!! Alicia is practical and it is a delight to read a book by her. She writes the way she would talk to you in person. You can tell she spent alot of time on this book. It would not surprise me if this was to be the next bestseller of the season.

I try to read as many diet and exercise books as I can. This book by Ms. Silverstone rates as one that I really enjoyed and try to incorporate into my own personal routine. In addition, I (and my training staff) often refer to this book while counseling our clients. This book is written in an inviting way, that is easily understood, and makes eating greener/without meat a viable and enticeable option! I DO tell everyone of my clients, however, that if they are going to buy ANY diet or exercise book, that they should FIRST read, "Build Your Mind, Your Body Will Follow". This is a short, easy read that empowers the reader to be in a great mindset and be fully motivated to accomplish ANY goal. So, do yourself a favor and pick that up too!

I am allergic to soy, and cannot even begin to live the life style - She does present alot of great material - but I still question, why as a species we have had some form of animal product to eat as we developed, not a manufactured form of soy. I perferred "Mariel's Kitchen - a less dramatic place to start on the vegan/vegetarian journey. I have recommended some other great books. I have tried to be a vegetarian for years, but my body does not respond to it at all.

I've been vegetarian off and on for several years and as we entered the new year I came across a review of this book and decided to pick it up. I really enjoyed it and I appreciated a book written by someone who's lifestyle reflects the subject they are writing about. I'm so tired of yoga DVDs made by aerobics instructors or diet cookbooks written by celebrity endorsers. She's honest and open, talking about her personal struggle with weight and the transition from meat eater to vegetarian to vegan. She has an eye opening section on slaughter houses and cruelty towards animals and builds a solid case for becoming a vegan by exploring the health benefits and detailing the downfalls of a diet consisting of dairy and meat products. The book doesn't rest solely on her opinion or facts, she quotes many sources including doctors, researchers and other authors. This is not a diet book per say although she includes brief sample meal plans for each transitional phase. Her theory is that by following a vegan diet you will naturally lose weight and change your lifestyle. About half of the book is filled with vegan recipes, she has a glossary of vegan products and has tips throughout about how to make your transition to vegetarian or vegan slowly and smoothly.

I heard about the book on Oprah-of course! I really was looking for a lifestyle change and the day I seen Oprah was the day I decided it was time. The next day I got the book and at first was a little intimidated by it. The recipes called for ingredients I had never heard of. But, she explains everything throughout the book and with online research I was able to figure out the ingredients. I got most of my ingredients at Raley's-they have a really good health food section! I did spend about $100 buying the main ingredients, which is actually pretty good considering I had absolutely nothing vegan. I have already tried 6 recipes and they were very good. My only worry is that I have a husband and 3 children to feed. So, I will be preparing 2 meals and buying different groceries! We'll see how that works out. I tried the South beach diet 3 years ago and was very successful. I gained about half back, because I really love bread! I'm only a week into this diet, so we'll see how I do with family functions where there's always carne asada and pork! Alicia Silverstone's book was very motivating and inspirational and was well written. I have already recommended it to my family and friends.

I have just started reading The Kind Diet and I am already floored by how blinded we have become about our food. We have given people to much control and they are blinded by payoffs. We have so much stress as it is in our lives that I have decided that I don't need it in my body as well. I thank Alicia Silverstone for making this book and taking off the veil that I have worn for years.

I loved reading this book. Alicia's personality really comes through the pages! She gives great reasons for becoming a vegan. However, I've tried two of the recipes and they were not very good. Buy this book to help motivate you to change your eating habits for your health and our planet's health, but try some other vegan and/or macrobiotic cookbooks. If these are the only recipes you try, you will not want to stay vegan.

I am not a vegan or a vegetarian, in fact I was a die heart meat eater. After reading this book, I am eating less meat, dairy and I haven't eaten an egg since. Alicia did a great job writing this book. It is very easy to read and she gets her point across very well.

What a wonderful book! It is extremely informative and gives the reader the tools to make up their own mind regarding the direction of their health. Two-thirds of the book is information based and can easily work for someone new to the vegetarian, vegan or kind diet lifestyles. The last third of the book is user-friendly recipes based on the categories (vegetarian/ vegan/ kind diet) listed throughout the book. I would have liked more detailed explanations on ingredients as most of the kind diet ingredients are not found in my general grocery store. As a vegetarian, I am familiar with health food stores, but I've learned to stick with what I know. This book has allowed me to branch out and look at other healthier kind dietary options. To be fair, there is a dictionary in the back of the book with explanations on some of the ingredients; however, photos would have been helpful so I could have visual of what I was looking for at the store. Additionally, Alicia has established a website and updates a daily blog that can assist any reader with questions. More importantly, most of my cookbooks have a shelf in the kitchen that they sit on until I am using a recipe from them. The Kind Diet sits on the counter next to the stove and is the first place I look when deciding on a new, healthier snack or menu for a dinner party!

It helped me get my energy back, it help me increase my body temperture-so I wouldn't freeze during the winter! It helped me loose inches, but I have to say those recipes are really hard to follow! Alot of the ingrediants and stuff I have to order and it just takes alot of time to make! So I don't really make the recipes anymore! I make my stuff simple! Like cooked whole grains, cooked vegetables, fresh vegtables, cooked beans, miso soup with (vegetables, miso, tofu, sea vegetables) I just try to make my stuff simple $ easy! It has also helped me with my health, I'm getting more energy and more protien in my diet now!

I was not sure about this book at first because I am not into Hollywood type hype. So I really went back & forth on purchasing. I am so glad I did. Alicia is down to earth and presents the information very well.

I know...gasp!! but after hearing what goes into our meat and how we are not taking care of ourselves with what we are eating, i decided to make a change. The recipes in the book are so easy and so good. Sometimes i forget that i even loved meat so much because i didn't know eating well could taste so good.

I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years, but have always wanted to go completely vegan. In this book, Alicia Silverstone not only writes about veganism in a very understandable and convincing manner, she also gives a wonderful variety of recipes. Since I bought this book three months ago I have cooked quite a lot of her recipes and have not been disappointed once. They are flavorful and delicious and I really do not miss the cheese or other dairy. I've dropped seven pounds and feel amazing! The main thing is that I do not feel deprived and at the same time I know I am doing good for the planet!

I love to read books that are written as if the person is speaking directly to you. I think this book did just that for me. For someone who is a beginner entering into becoming a vegetarian and/or vegan this is an excellent book. For people already in the life style of being a vegetarian and/or vegan this book probably re-establishes what they already know. I personally enjoyed the book. I was able to go to my local international farmers market and pick up everything I needed to make all the recipes I put on my menu for the week. I must say that it took a little longer than my normal trip to the farmers market. A lot of the ingredients I had never heard of but I was able to find after a while of searching. I also went to Whole Foods to get a few extra ingredients. Some of the ingredients can be on the expensive side but at the same time you will have them for a while. Example: Mirin is around 8 to 10 bucks a bottle. I buy mostly organic so I was expecting the prices to be a little on the high side. If you live in a bigger city and the ingredients are available for you to purchase, this book does contain lots of yummy recipes. With every cook book there are the good and the bad. This book is no exception. But from my experience, I have enjoyed it thus far. My advice to anyone when entering this book or any vegan book, expect to pay a little more for your grocery bill than normal, expect for your body to change in away that you have never seen, expect to go to the bathroom (#2) at least twice a day, and enter into this life style with an open mind and stomach. Everything you will not enjoy but you will find out what works best for you, as with anything in life. I have been using this book amoungst others for 2weeks now and I see and feel the difference.

This was an awesome book, very insightful & entertaining. As with everything in life you take each "thing" that works for you and do it. I am in the process of just that, and I am already seeing & feeling wonderful, positive changes. This is a great book for anyone.

This book is so enjoyable and easy to read! I was an omnivore and because of this book have turned vegan. It has been almost two months now, and I feel and look better! Alicia makes this transition less scary and gives a lot of tools and resources to help you! A must-read in my opinion.

This vegan approach includes exotic ingredients, but some are very hard to find so I' m using it with different cook books. Be ready for some serious change with this life style.

I bought this book to start my vegan journey. I soon realized that I would need to supplement with "real" vegan cook books. Book is thought provoking.
