KINGBIRD SIXTEEN presents a detailed personal account of the twelve combat missions flown by Sergeant Bernard Rafael Yglesias. He served as the central fire control gunner aboard his B-29 Superfortress during the incendiary bombing campaign of Japan in the spring of 1945. On a mission of 29 May over Yokohama, Japan, Sergeant Yglesias' aircraft was badly damaged and eventually crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Their B-29 was only twenty miles away from the safety of Iwo Jima. All ten men aboard were killed in the crash. Sergeant Yglesias' eldest son, Ben, includes a war-orphan's perspective as the story unfolds while also sharing views of his personal healing process.
