I found Alena's character intriguing; half-witch and half-vampire, she has magical abilities and shares many of the same traits as vampires. She has vampiric tendencies which she keeps at bay using aromatherapy and a special diet. Her character alone gives the plot an original twist that makes it stand out from the rest of the YA vampire novels available. I received a free copy of this book with the option of leaving an honest review. Copeland also introduces readers to other enigmatic characters: Elizabeth, Orm, and Alena's mother. While hints are provided regarding the histories of these three characters, Copeland's focus remains primarily on Alena; however, I get the feeling that more about their history may be revealed later on in the series. I hope so because I found myself wanting to know more about them. Besides the characters, I felt that what kept me from wanting to put the book down was the premise. It's apparent that Hunter's and Alena's destinies are intertwined, but why? How did this bond between them come to pass? I was compelled to read more to see if I could figure it out; however, the answers to those questions still eluded me. In most cases, I would normally find this frustrating and lose interest, but Copeland provided me with enough tantalizing bits of information to keep me reading. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series! If you enjoy paranormal novels with vampires, witches, and magic, I think you'll enjoy Kingdom of Embers. While it does have some teenage drama and angst, there is a noticeable lack of the emo/goth vibe that is prevalent in many of the young adult, paranormal novels on the market.

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book*** I really enjoyed this book and I'm going to be chomping at the bit waiting for the next book in the series. Luckily for me it's due out towards the end of June so I just have to hold on until then. I have a reminder setup on my calendar so I can start looking for the next book when it should be released. The storyline and characters are complex without being difficult to follow which adds to the great story unfolding. The story has vampires, witches, and magic. Alene the main character of this book is a young women soon to reach her majority/18 and a crossroad in her young life. Alene is half-vampire and half-witch a combination forbidden from existing. She bridles at her mother's and several others regimented life schedule for her and their lack of answers to her many questions about her father and what her future holds for her. A high-school senior her life is beset with the usual high-school angst of classes, mean girls, and the new world of boys. There are so many things going on in Alene life you need to read the book and how well the author has managed to blend and bind everything together. This was the first book I've read from this author but it will definitely not be the last. Get your copy and you can wait with me until the next book releases. I know that you won't be disappointed. I raced through the book as quickly as I could because it was so hard putting the book down for any longer than I had too.
