Overview

Kiss of Fire (Imdalind Series #1) by Rebecca Ethington

Joclyn Despain has been marred by a brand on her skin. She doesn't know why the mark appeared on her neck, but she doesn't want anyone to see it, including her best friend Ryland, who knows everything else about her. The scar is the reason she hides herself behind baggy clothes, and won't let the idea of kissing Ryland enter her mind, no matter how much she wants to.
The scar is the reason she is being hunted.
If only she knew that she was.
If only she had known that the cursed stone her estranged father sent for her 16th birthday would trigger a change in her. Now, she is being stalked by a tall blonde man, and is miraculously throwing her high school bully ten feet in the air.
Joclyn attempts to find some answers and the courage to follow her heart. When Ryland finds her scar; but he knows what it means, and who will kill her because of it.

I probably shouldn’t be writing this so soon after finishing the book, because my emotions are highest, but I don’t care. I need to get all of these thoughts out before I forget them. Joclyn doesn’t know much about a mark she has right below her ear, just that it changed everything. It changed her dad—causing him to leave them—and it changed herself, making her become a girl who hides and tries not to be noticed. And Joclyn has a friend. Her very best friend, Ryland. Ryland has secrets—very, very dark ones. Secrets that are intertwined with Joclyn. Ryland has been through a lot, some might even say too much. But I admired him (and quite honestly I was in awe of how he kept it together after finding out what he’d been through) and I steadily grew to really like him. He was one of my favorite characters. Joclyn is stubborn. All throughout this book, she’s stubborn. But I liked that when the secrets were revealed, she accepted them and didn’t make too big of a deal at saying stuff like “No, this can’t be possible,” because it is and she knows it. I grew to really like her too, and found myself truly understanding what she was going through. Her reactions were believable, which is always something I love reading in paranormal books. The plot. Oh, the plot. It was brilliant. The secrets, the hints, the language! I absolutely loved it all. The world and the language seemed really well thought out, which is always a fantastic plus. I also loved how each piece of information was realistically given to us, there was no “let me bombard you with all of this information.” And the secondary characters were fantastic as well! Ilyan and Wyn especially (although I feel as if Ovailia has reasons for her actions). I really enjoyed reading about them, though Ilyan intrigues me as well. But this book had something that I completely love—if it’s done right: true love. Soul mates. A pure bond between two people. Or, as this book puts it, a Zêlství (though technically that means something slightly different, but I just wanted to use the beautiful words that the author created). And this was definitely done right. The beginning of the book, though I know was necessary, was a bit frustrating. All of the secrets surrounding Jos, and though I knew something was happening I didn’t know what. I just wanted everyone to come out with it, but nooooo, let’s just not say anything, shall we? Finally when things are revealed is when things start to get good. Or rather, should I say great? At that point you couldn’t pull me away from the book, I was glued. I also might have snapped a little at my family members for interrupting me. Whoops. But the book got so addicting, I kept just reading and flipping pages to see what was going to happen next; how they were going to succeed; how things would get better. But, this is a series. And as we all know, not everything gets resolved in the first book of the series. The book ended up with a cliffhanger, yes, but it also gave us a little bit of hope. (Though the last sentence killed me. Gah!) I most definitely recommend this book for people who want angst, action, true love, magic, and series, for I most definitely will not stop at this book. (Read: I am quickly going to get the next book because I HAVE TO.)

One of the best books I've ever read. It has easily become one of my favorites. You are drawn in from the very beginning. The magical story leaves you guessing til the very last page. I highly recommend reading this book and am counting down til the next is released. I predict it will be the next big series.

I just loved this book! In Kiss Of Fire, I immediately fell in love with Ryland and Joclyn, got completely sucked in the story and loved it till the end. The concept of this story is amazing. The twists thrilling. And, the romance so perfect and bittersweet. Joclyn is different from most main characters and I loved her for it. I love how she liked to ride a long board around. I like how she prefers to be invisible, how even though she's trying to hide her scar it's more than that. She likes to be herself and doesn't want to stand out in a crowd. She's strong and brave, and I adored her character. Her only tick, of the people she cares most for, is Ryland. Ryland LaRue who is so opposite of her. Ryland is filthy rich. One hundred and a million percent hot with stunning blue eyes. Goes to an all boys school. And yet, he is best friends with Joclyn. As you watch their relationship you can see how close they are. How much Ryland protects Joclyn and would do anything for her. I fell head over heels with Ryland... I just love that boy so dang much. I want a future for these two! Totally Joclyn + Ryland ship here! Other than Ryland and Joclyn there are other characters to love like Wyn and Ilyan. Wyn is such a great and outgoing friend. Then there's Ilyan, who I actually really, really liked. And no one hit me for saying this because I AM Team Ryland till the end, but I wouldn't mind if something were to happen between Ilyan and Joclyn because I think he's a good guy.  The ending is a killer. How can you make us fall so deeply for a character then take it away? Believe me when I say I was definitely hoping for a different ending but alas, it just gives me something to hope for in the next four books! I'm hoping its resolved before the final book, but I'll just have to read on and find out! Loved the world, the concept, all of the characters (good and bad), and just everything about this story! On to the next one!

I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Since that ultra-famous lightning bolt scar burst onto the scene, I have gravitated to all things witchy, so when I read the description of this book, it summoned me as surely as an accio spell. But when I dove in, I began to see that outsider-turned-chosen-one pattern and wondered if this one was going to be another rip off as transparent as a threadbare Hogwart’s robe, and while there are some basic similarities (the scar, the destined destroyer, the orphan), I couldn’t have been more mistaken. The storyline is completely unique to anything I’ve read. Ethington has woven a complex world into the tapestry of the ordinary without managing to overload the reader with too much, too fast. We actually get to know the protagonist before we learn of her abilities and her would-be savior status. Nothing is more annoying than being bombarded with characters (all with freaky names) and their random abilities while still trying to figure out the main character’s emotional damage. I love that Joclyn was insecure and wanted to hide—like 90% of all teenage girls—though I wanted to strangle her on occasion with that dang ruby necklace for this exact trait. I love that she stood up to the mean girl but only because she didn’t have a choice. But the thing I love the most is that Joclyn grows; she becomes stronger and more self-assured as the novel progresses. Also, the love story between Joclyn and Ryland is distinct in that he pursues her, and she must push him away. My only complaint is with the missing father complication. We don’t ever really “see” him, and the letter he sends Joclyn just seemed too contrived. The rest of the plot is well-constructed, but this father thing seems a little deus ex machina. 4.5 stars

*I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review* I don't like spoilers in reviews so I never explain scenes, just how I felt :] Kiss of Fire is a wonderful story that will completely capture you in the prologue, and won't even let you go after you finish the last word. It was such a captivating story with amazing characters that kept building. There is a little bit of everything and I am so thrilled that I still have 3 more books to share in this world. Rebecca Ethington's rich and colorful world that she created for this series will leave you reaching for more. The magic development and battle scenes are so captivating and wonderfully written, it was so easy to picture It happening(LOVE when authors can do this for me). All the scenes with Ryland & Jocelyn are my absolute favorite though! Childhood friends always hold a special place in my heart<3 I highly recommend this book, you wont be disappointed. Cheers Rebecca and thank you again for the chance to experience this world!

Kiss of Fire by Rebecca Ethington is just terrific. Such a great story, plot and characters combined. I loved this so much. Just way too many editing errors, it became a bit distracting and frustrating, but I could not put the book down. I seriously need more.

A must read book. The first book in the Imdalind series is an exciting, heart wrenching story of love, loss and magic. Ryland grows up hiding the truth of his life and his magic from Joclyn, his best friend and true love. She is also hiding a secret, but that secret turns out to be much bigger than she could ever have imagined. When the truth of their lives is uncovered, they are thrown into a battle for survival, as Edmund, Ryland's father, tries to destroy them all. Ryland and Joclyn's connection draws you in and captures your heart, while the authors writing makes you feel the love, friendship, sacrifice and devastation these characters experience. Wyn's buoyant personality adds some humour to the book and the potential of a love triangle, with the powerful Ilyan, flickers in the background creating anxiety. The plot grabs you and keeps you on the edge of your seat right to the end of the book, leaving you desperate to read the next one in the series.

Growing up Joclyn was different than all the others kids, she has scar on the side of face. She doesn’t know how it got there it just is and since she doesn’t like it, she doesn’t want anyone to see it…the only one that knows is her mom. Ryland is Joclyn’s best friend, her only friend. He likes her for what she is, not what she looks like. Joclyn’s mother has worked for his father ever since they were 5 years old, so they have grown up together. Things change on Joclyn’s 16th birthday when she gets a letter from her father. A new girl shows up a school, who friends Joclyn and there is strange man that is always around but she doesn’t know who it is. Jocelyn wants to know what is going on and who this guy is and while looking around, her scar is revealed to Ryland and than that is truly when Joclyn’s world changes. I have had this book for a long time now but never sat down to read it, well I finally did and let me let me tell you I don’t know why I waited so long! Right from the beginning, you felt something for Jocelyn…a young girl who has no friends, is bullied because she is “different” and just wants to be with her best friend. Than there is Ryland…the best friend that any girl can ask for…he is there when she needs him, boosting her confidence and taking care of here however there is more feelings there that neither of them want to admit too (gotta love a romance). The story line was fantastic! I thought it moved along at a great pace and I kept wanting to read on to see what would happen next and see what the scar truly meant if anything….and god you can’t forget the mysterious man…Illyan, her protecter *sigh*. As the story goes on you will find out more about who Illyan is, her new friend and why Edmund is after Joclyn. I feel in love with the story right away and was very anxious to read book 2…Definitely a must read!!!

I love this series!! Re-reading the series. One problem though, our main girl is too whiny. I get that she's going through a rough time, but there's only so much whining and crying one can take. I won't spoil anything, but she needs to put her big girl panties on. Overall, I really do love this.

I was drawn to this book and blew thru the first 80 pgs and found it a lovely story about a childhood friendship turning into love. Then the book took more twists and turns than I can count. I would only recommend this book for teens that love scary movies. It's full of magic, murder, war, and bloody scenes. I was disappointed with the ending but get it that the author wants you to get the next book in her series............
