Overview

A collection of klezmer music from the Lower East Side of New York. Most of the current big names in the style are present, including John Zorn and the Klezmatics. In all truth, it takes a little while for this album to warm up. The first few numbers are relatively slow works, building up to an eclectic sound from the Klezmatics, who eventually liven up the music with a rendition of a Yiddish translation of King Solomon's Song of Songs. After this, a funk-laden bass opens up the Hasidic New Wave's "Debka," and then it all slows back down again for the Paradox Trio's slightly simmering blend of Greek, Turkish, Armenian, and pure klezmer. Finally, the album ends with something of a beat poet/comic in Allo Trehorn's "Ode to Karl Marx," backed up with instrumental help by the Klezmatics. For a nice collection of klezmer, this isn't too bad of an album. For a more gripping album, though, something solely by the Klezmatics, or maybe the Klezmer Conservatory Band, might be a better choice.
