Knight of Ocean Avenue by Tara Lain

A Love in Laguna Novel

How can you be twenty-five and not know you’re gay? Billy Ballew runs from that question. A high school dropout, barely able to read until he taught himself, Billy’s life is driven by his need to help support his parents as a construction worker, put his sisters through college, coach his Little League team, and not think about being a three-time loser in the engagement department. Being terrified of taking tests keeps Billy from getting the contractor's license he so desires, and fear of his mother's judgment blinds Billy to what could make him truly happy.

Then, in preparation for his sister’s big wedding, Billy meets Shaz—Chase Phillips—a rising-star celebrity stylist who defines the word gay. To Shaz, Billy embodies everything he’s ever wanted—stalwart, honest, brave—but even if Billy turns out to be gay, he could never endure the censure he’d get for being with a queen like Shaz. How can two men with so little in common find a way to be together? Can the Stylist of the Year end up with the Knight of Ocean Avenue?

I received an ARC of Knight of Ocean Avenue by Tara Lain from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.  Fortunately it isn’t hard to give this fantastic book a great review.  I may have used up this months quota of tissues though.  I fell head over heels in love with Billy Ballew from the first page.  Billy is a good guy who is trying to do right by everyone.  He loves and supports his family but has had no luck finding the girl to give his mother grandkids. He meets out and proud Shaz—Chase Phillips and the sparks fly.  How can you be twenty-five and not know you’re gay? This book explores that and the growing relationship between Billy and Shaz.  Like any good romance this book made me laugh and cry and sometimes sigh but I loved every minute of it.

My first book by this author. 235 p, HEA, m/m, adult content (sexy!), interesting characters with good development, believable story, complex and thorough plot, well edited and professional. Only negative was overuse of the word "darling" - ugh! Also recommend books by Annabeth Albert.

This was such an entertaining, well-written book! Billy Ballew and his family members were really sweet and it was fun to read about their interactions. Shaz - Chase Phillips - was amazing. I recommend this book highly.

Knight of Ocean Avenue is such a sweet story. After seeing a lot of the hype for this book, I was afraid to read it and not like it, but that was not the case. I absolutely loved it and the characters involved (Oh Shaz, you are awesome!)! Billy has been unlucky at love. His sole reason for existence (in his mind) is to care for everyone. Everyone but himself. He is helping with his sister’s wedding when he meets the flamboyant Shaz, an openly gay man who is not afraid to be who he is. Shaz sees Billy and instantly wants him. But, Billy isn’t even sure if he is gay and he would never date anyone as “out there” as Shaz. Like I mentioned, this is such a sweet story of Billy discovering his true self and sexuality. Even though he is afraid of what being with Shaz would do to his reputation, the heart wants what he heart wants (among other parts) and the two men connect in a way neither of them even dreamed of. The each bring something to the relationship and see in each other what others do not. It really is a sweet, tender, story of love. I’m so glad that I read it, loved, it, and will be adding this one to my read it again rotation. *copy provided for review.

You know you have those books that you pick up and start reading and before you know it the whole day has passed you bye? Well that was me and this book. Billy was such an amazing well thought out character, can’t really pigeon hole him as GFY because he knew with out knowing. And after it all falls apart he does try. The loyalty he feels towards he’s family, the fact that he’s giving every penny over just to help his family survive. And Shaz, at first I just knew I would hate him, but actually FUN! The way he think he needs certain things to survive and grow in the business but as the story goes along, he grows and realizes maybe love can conquer all. And who knew that Billy and Shaz would actually make such a wonderful team. Billy can and does teach Shaz about loyalty and love. And Shaz can teach Billy and the letting go and just being. The people that Shaz and Billy surround themselves with are just as great. The crew Billy works with, the team Shaz has put together. And even though everyone has some hurdles to get over it all works out in the end. I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review by Crystals Many reviews

Reviewed by Francesca and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog Billy is your stereotypical male, straight male that is. He dropped out of high school and is now working in the construction field, successfully might I add. Tests are not for him though, and he feels he can’t do better in life because he’s just not that smart. In the meantime, he’s made it his mission to take care of his parents financially, putting a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. And if he’s not that lucky in love? Well, he’s not necessarily sweating it. When his sister is getting married, and he’s just been dumped by his latest girlfriend, he is teamed up with a stylist to make him look more presentable during the wedding festivities. And it just turns out to be the gay guy from the coffee shop he frequents, whom he always thought was an attractive guy. In a very non-gay way. This is a story of discovery for Billy. Him, the big and muscular construction guy may just be attracted to guys. It’s always amazing for me to read these stories and then not find a lot of turmoil in that characters mind. I would imagine this late in life it would be a struggle to come to terms with something like this. But not so much in Billy’s case. And it’s all thanks to the hot redhead, Shaz. I loved Shaz’s character. He’s totally over the top, exactly what you would imagine that gay stylist that works on weddings, if you know what I mean. He is also very smart and caring, and I couldn’t help but fall for him almost as hard and fast as Billy. I liked their chemistry and the fact they both give as good as they take. They take care of each other. Both in and out of the bedroom. I always come to Tara Lain for a sweet and a bit over the top LGBT read. And she delivers with this new series! KNIGHT OF OCEAN AVENUE was a sweet and adorable gay-for-you story! And definitely leaves me wanting more of this series.

FiveStars I loved this sweet, funny story. Blue-collar builder Billy Ballew and celebrity stylist Shaz Phillips are one of the most unlikely couples in romantic fiction. But they work. Beyond their wardrobes and the stereotypes, both are wonderful men. Closeted Billy is a brilliant character. His struggles are heartbreaking and his strength is beautiful. Shaz’s glossy camp exterior is just as superficial as Billy’s dating history - underneath the eyeliner and designer clothing is a very sweet, lonely man. As unlikely worlds collide, humour and heartbreak vye for centre stage. Supporting characters add warmth and depth to the story. This is a well written, thoroughly enjoyable read. I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads. Sarah

I absolutely loved this book!  Both men were incredibly sweet and adorable in their own ways and they complimented each other beautifully.  In true Tara Lain fashion, their story was so very authentic and heartwarming.  I have loved all her works, but this one has just rocketed to my top three favorites among them.  The supporting characters were so great; I can’t wait to see some of their stories in future books in the series. Knight of Ocean Avenue is a multifaceted story that just might surprise you now and then.  It’s just a fabulous start to a new series that I’m anxious to see more of!
