I loved this book and the first one in the series, Knight of Desire. It is great to read romance books with strong and independent women--at least as independent as they can be during these medieval times. Margaret Mallory makes a wonderful debut in this series of books. Mallory's writing style is clear and descriptive and carries you into the wonderful romantic story. There is a bit of intrigue in the story but it does not overwhelm the romance story.

Lady Isobel Hume had gone from a rambunctious child to a married woman at the tender age of 13. After suffering through a miserable relationship to Lord Hume she finds herself a widow by the age of 22. Assuming that her late husband had left his lands and wealth to her she finally breaths of sigh of relief only to be slammed with the reality that her dead husband left it to a man who convinced him that he was his son. Another man has deceived her and led her down the road of betrayal. Now Isobel is requested by King Henry to make a political marriage to Lord Phillippe de Roche to ensure Phillippe's acceptance of the King's takeover. Isobel does not want this match but knows that as a woman in this time and place she has no choice or say in the matter. How she hoped to be free of another husband that would dominate her and not let her spirits soar. Yet just as she is prepared to wait out her fate of meeting deRoche in walks Sir Stephen Carleton one the dashing fighters in King Henry's army. He is a known womanizer and true scoundrel but none of that stops her heart from reaching out for the man she should not want. Stephen feels the same and he knows as well that the last person he should be pursing is Isobel - she is too good and kind for the likes of him. But that does not stop him and when his heart becomes tangled with hers the swords are clashing and the emotions are running unchecked. But when deRoche arrives to take his intended and secure the marriage contract it is an unwilling Isobel that goes even though the passion and lust she feels is for Stephen not Phillippe. Isobel quickly learns of the deceitful nature of her future husband and knows that she can beat him at his own game and once she learns of his true intentions toward King Henry nothing will stop her from saving everyone's lives even at the risk of her own. When I think of this book the word that comes to mind is lovely. The character of Isobel is written with a fiery personality but yet she has a passionate heart and a kind and gentle nature. Isobel has known pain and suffering and resents her father for giving her up in marriage at the age of 13 but all this is nothing in comparison to her love for Stephen and the loyalty she feels for her King and country. Lovely is the relationship between Stephen and Isobel and your own heart weeps with all the issues that are keeping them apart. Mary Gramlich ("The Reading Reviewer") www.marygramlich.com

Lady Isobel Hume has been betrayed by the men in her life too often. Her father married her off to a much older man in exchange for riches. It hardly seems fair that after Lady Isobel Hume survived eight years of a difficult and loveless marriage, she discovers that her husband has left the entire estate to a "stranger" who made the dubious claim of being his son out of wedlock. Lady Isobel refuses to marry her husband's heir and instead agrees to accept a marriage arranged by her king to further the alliance with France. Lady Isobel travels to Normandy to meet the King and await her betrothed. Lady Isobel is drawn to Sir Stephen Carleton, the reckless, devilishly charming companion to the King. Lady Isobel is relieved to discover that de Roche, her intended, is handsome and every bit as attractive as Sir Stephen. But Lady Isobel still finds herself drawn to Sir Stephen. As far as Sir Stephen Carleton is concerned, the only woman worth marrying is taken. His sister-in-law Catherine has both beauty and virtue, but the others that he'd encountered seem almost interchangeable. The women he's known have been governed by their self-interest and desire for power and riches. But Sir Stephen is intrigued by Lady Isobel - not only is she strikingly beautiful but she's independent, intelligent, and loyal. As friendship brings Sir Stephen and Lady Isobel, they work together to serve their King - and each other. Kinght of Pleasure is a thoroughly enjoyable romantic read. Sympathetic characters, politics, intrigue, deep loyalty, and unexpected plot twists - Knight of Pleasure is sure to provide a fun escape during this hectic holiday season. Publisher: Forever (December 1, 2009), 400 pages. Review copy provided by the publisher.

Lady Isobel agrees to wed a French nobleman, Sir Stephen, at her king's request. When the man that she is to marry asks her to defy her current king and the place that she calls home, she is faced with a difficult decision. This man who will soon be her husband has stolen her heart and now she is torn between what has been and what could be. Sir Stephen has always been a ladies man. He may have met the one woman with the power to tame him. Will she succeed and make this man her partner in life or will she will be forced to choose between the man she's fallen in love with and the people she has loved all her life? Hot and steamy with lots of action, need I say more?

In 1417 Lady Isobel Hume does not grieve the death of her spouse as she did not want to marry him when she was just thirteen and dreamed of the Knights of the Round Table; after they exchanged vows her older spouse did nothing to rectify her opinion over the next eight years until he died. However, instead of liberating her, his death leaves her at the mercy of men as the deed to his estate goes to a man she despises. She turns to King Henry who arranges a marriage to a French aristocrat. Undercover operative Sir Stephen Carleton works in France allegedly to neutralize arguments before they turn ugly. He has been named Isobel's guardian until she marries. To both their chagrin, Isobel and Stephen are attracted to one another. However, both remain loyal to their monarch and ignore their feelings until they rescue two children, and she learns her fiancé Lord Roche is a traitor. This is a terrific fifteenth century romance filled with intrigue and two strong lead characters. Isobel and Stephen know the price is their respective heads if they betray their monarch, but love is a difficult emotion to ignore. Although "eliminating" the fiancé with sedition eases their perilous plight, fans will enjoy Margaret Mallory's marvelous medieval romance. Harriet Klausner
