I don't knit, but received this book as a gift, based on it's ties to roller derby. Not only are the pictures amazing, there is an introduction to the sport, a rules guide, and little hints and tips for about roller derby scattered throughout the pages!
After I thought I had read the entire book, I was was skimming through the patterns, which make no sense to me, as a non-knitter, and was delighted to find little jokes spread in the patterns as well! The writer is very funny, and an authentic derby girl to boot!
Glad I got this gift, and will purchase to send to other friends as well!

This is so different from the knitting books I usually purchase but in some ways, it reminds me of Alice Starmore's knitting books. Those not only pull from the culture of a geographic setting to develop patterns, but also offer some insight about the lifestyle. This is an entirely modern, young, and rather funky look at what girls of today are doing in roller derby and this is nothing like the roller derby I remember from the 70's. I found the patterns to be easy to follow and the roller derby theme to be a fun look at the sport. It's two things I never would have though belonged together, but they work well in this book.

How can you go wrong with a book like this? It has more action than any 'craft' book I have ever read before. It gives readers/knitters a great insight on the girls of the Tornado Sirens/Naptown Roller Girls league as well as some really awesome knitting crafts. I am a Fresh Meat knitter myself and it didn't leave me in the penalty box for finishing a project! There are projects for all levels of knitters. Even my mother-in-law loved the vast variety of projects offered and the great insiders viewpoint on Roller Derby! It did however, concern her a bit about my safety when she saw all the slings, pillows and crutch pads! LOL! Knit & Skate on!
