La Marea

Czech vocalist Marta Topferova has a way with South American sounds that makes listeners forget all about her Eastern European origins. Enchanted from an early age by the music of Chilean roots ensemble Inti Illimani, Topferova has likewise absorbed the smoky troubadour tradition of the most rarified Latin American pop. There's a bit of tango, a smidgen of nueva canción to her torchy voice, while her lyrics (she's written or co-written the entire album) present a warm imagery that's fully in keeping with the poet-crooners of Latin America. For La Marea, Topferova works with a pan-Latin cast of New York expatriates, notably the harpist Edmar Castañeda, who gives the album a wonderfully distinctive Andean lilt; Neil Ochoa, the Venezuelan percussionist who has previously lent delicate shadings to jazz-oriented Latin bands' distinctive singers; and Jenny Scheinmann, a well-regarded downtown New York violinist. Everyone lays back, allowing Topferova to weave her dusky spell, deploying sparse, relaxed versions of rhythms including Colombian gaita and Cuban son. The effect is wonderfully subdued, sophisticated mood music that flickers like candlelight.

Smoky and sexy in the mode of the best samba, but haunting in that beautiful Susanna Baca way, this is the most magical Latin ablum I've heard since BVSC. The harp playing swings with a jazzy cool you never knew the instrument was capable of. And Marta is as beautiful as her music. Buy this, thank me later.
