A mistress. A mountain of debt. A mysterious wreck of a building.

Delilah Swanpoole, Countess of Derring, learns the hard way that her husband, “Dear Dull Derring,” is a lot more interesting—and perfidious—dead than alive. It’s a devil of an inheritance, but in the grand ruins of the one building Derring left her, are the seeds of her liberation. And she vows never again to place herself at the mercy of a man.

But battle-hardened Captain Tristan Hardy is nothing if not merciless. When the charismatic naval hero tracks a notorious smuggler to a London boarding house known as the Rogue’s Palace, seducing the beautiful, blue-blooded proprietress to get his man seems like a small sacrifice.

They both believe love is a myth. But a desire beyond reason threatens to destroy the armor around their hearts. Now a shattering decision looms: Will Tristan betray his own code of honor…or choose a love that might be the truest thing he’s ever known?

“Thank you sir. I should never have worked any of that out on my own. Thank goodness a man came along.” And therein is the crux and the tale of this story: women, ill-treated by the men in their lives and wholly fed up with the lot of them, and the ‘constraints’ placed by society that determine their should and should nots. Delilah Derring, formerly known as Countess and her friend Angelique Breedlove have both been left in penury with the death of Delilah’s ‘Dear Dull Derring’ the Earl and her husband. Living in masses of debt, he used connections and his title to afford a life which included his home with Delilah and an arrangement with his mistress, Angelique. Through the first of many ‘unexpected’ actions, Delilah encountered her husband’s former mistress, and the two have formed the start of a friendship – free from ‘conventions’ of society, and bonding together over their common ill-treatment by the men in their lives and their own dire circumstances. Tristan Hardy is a wholly self-made man, rising from extreme poverty to naval hero, to now running a division that is tasked with discovering and eliminating smugglers, particularly after a family was burned in their beds after refusing to aid the smugglers. Tristan has run into a dead end, but thinks it’s possible and plausible that Delilah and Angelique have knowledge of (or are benefitting from) Derring’s apparent connections to the smugglers, and he’s going to avail himself of a room in the newly reopened boarding house, using his skills of observation and detection, and perhaps a bit of late night skulking to find the answers. But, it’s clear to him that Delilah is something ‘different’ and quite special, and that her innocence isn’t possibly an act, nor is the interest she engenders or his need to reach out and… The characters in this story were divine! From Angelique’s rather cynical and world weary attitude that occasionally came off as condescending where the more innocent and less experienced Delilah was concerned. Delilah’s determination to live her life on her own terms, being beholden to, or directed by no one but herself and her own desires. Her maid Dot, who, while possessing a streak of loyalty a mile long has little else to recommend her in terms of skills – but always trying. The friendship between these three, and the dark humor that keeps a sort of balance between Angelique and Delilah adds a familiarity and security to their little group, in very insecure circumstances. The attraction to Tristan, and his for Delilah, counterbalance his own insecurities and his struggles with the emotional side of life, nicely balanced by his right-hand man’s obvious infatuation with his betrothed. You’ll laugh, you’ll sigh and you’ll find this a wonderful escape that feels plausible and probable, full of heart and hope and a wonderful introduction to a new series. With the tease in the epilogue leading to the one very big mystery yet unanswered, I can’t wait for the next. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I received an ARC from the publisher in return for my honest review. This is a new historical series by JAL, it's been 4 long years since she wrote in this genre, we anticipated greatness, it fell a little short but nevertheless it's still a good story with humor, drama and angst. The HEA was well done and the relationship between Delilah and Angelique is what made this story flow so well... Countess of Derring, Delilah Swanpoole, is now a widow with the passing of her husband, "Dear Dull Derring". She learns the hard way that her husband has left her and his mistress penniless except for one building down by the docks that he won gambling. Delilah feels liberated and vows to never again place herself at the mercy of any man. The two women sell their jewelry, proceed to clean this grand building and open a boarding house called "The Grand Palace On The Thames". Captain Tristan Hardy is merciless when it comes to solving a case for his King. He is considered a hero by many. Tristan is tracking a smuggler and the Blue Rock gang to Delilah's London boarding house known as the Rogue's Palace. When he meets the prim and proper proprietress he knows the sacrifice will be well worth it. Neither believe in love, it's a myth to them but the desire that they are experiencing may destroy the armor around their hearts. A decision with shattering affects must be made: Can Tristan live up to his code of honor and have a love that might be the best things he's ever known?

After her husband's death, Delilah Swanpoole, Lady Derring finds out that her husband was in debt and the only inheritance left for her was a derelect building on the docks. In addition to this revelation, she also finds out that Derring had a mistress and they decide to work together to make the buliding into a boarding house. Captain Tristan Hardy tracks a smuggler to their boarding house and is very attracted to Delilah. Wow, what a book. I laughed, I cried, I basked in Long's prose. This is only the second book that I've read by Julie Anne Long, and I can't wait for the next in this series. This book had everything. Two fully developed characters with flaws who were strong and intelligent and very dryly witty. Strong, yet realistic female friendships, a mystery and intrigue. A fun cast of secondary characters. Hot steamy sex and moments of laugh out loud humor. I loved seeing Delilah grow into herself after first growing up in gentile poverty and then being in a loveless marriage. I loved watching Tristan realize he had a heart after growing up on the streets of St. Giles and working his way up the ranks in the Navy. I loved watching the two of them spar with each other. The fit each other like a puzzle piece. She had the warmth and open heart and he had the cynicism and street smarts. I loved this book.

I was so excited to see a new historical from Julie after she had been writing a lot of contemporary. This story did not disappoint that anticipation! What does a Countess do when he husband departs this earth but leaves behind a mountain of debt? One building, yes one building was left to Delilah that she had to make the most of to survive. Of course it was near the docks, not the best of locations but when she runs into Angelique, her former husband's mistress, they devise a plan. What? Really? Well a lady has to do what a lady has to do to survive! They sell what that can and end up opening a boarding house on the property. Tristan is the Captain of the King's Blockade and has been in charge of rounding up smugglers. There is a group of smugglers left he is determined to catch because they committed a heinous crime against a peer. All paths lead him to a piece of property owned by a man who had just died and his widow had taken over the property. Well let the adventure begin! Wondering if Delilah is involved in the smuggling he gets close to her and takes a room at the boarding house. There is a definite connection between these two and he does what he must to see if he can learn information from her. (ok yes there is lust!) I really enjoyed this story and watching the building of the relationship between the two and would recommend to all! I read this through Edelweiss.

4.5 stars I’m always eager to find the start of a new series from a new to me author and this one didn’t disappoint. I loved Delilah and Tristan. She’s so open and optimistic and he’s so gruff and realistic. Together they have excellent conversation and flirty banter and the best chemistry. I truly enjoyed reading them get to know each other. I’m also loving Angelique and hoping hoping hoping the next book is hers. Plot wise it was a bit slow moving. There’s a good amount of things to build up and put into place and while it was necessary, it got boring. I wanted loads of conversation and at some points there were pages and pages of inner monologue. Overall, it was these characters that kept me entertained and a grand gesture that could be the best I’ve ever read. I can’t wait to see what’s next in the series. **Huge thanks to Avon Books for providing the arc free of charge**

That degenerated into a poor imitation of Ms Lomg's better work. Thebook lacked pacing and failed to hold my interest.
