Lorelei Wheeler returns home after four years to the small farming town of Annabel, and finds life as she knew it there to be slowly unraveling. Her father is drinking. Her mother seems haunted. Her brother, always a loner, is now disappearing for days at a time. Animals have vanished. A child has drowned, the body never recovered. Lorelei discovers an eerie, unnatural area in the forest. What she comes to understand is that the town itself is haunted by a presence in the woods. Lorelei must uncover the mystery that lies there and through that knowledge, try to redeem the soul, the life, of her brother, and of the town itself.

All eyes turned from Oracleglow to the white expecting queen. "A-as you can tell, I am expecting kits. But I have horrible news." Whiteblossom looked at her paws. "My mate, Differentthoughts, has left the Clan jut before the cremonies today. He told me that he was becoming a kittypet." The whole Clan gasped. Powerheart jumped up. "You could have TOLD me before I started the ceremonies!" He hissed. Oracleglow flicked her tail for silence. The clearing grew silent. Whiteblossom continued. "And he demanded for the kits as soon as they open their eyes." She finished warily. Deadlyoak snarled. "After hearing about the idiot, I don't feel like being mean anymore!" "Silence!" Oracelglow spat. "In fact, I have news of my own. Leafwind, Bravepaw, Couragewind, Drypaw, Wrappaw, and I are going to Moonstone tonight. Leafwind and Wrappaw are to make four traveling wraps before we leave. Powerheart, you are free to join the elders. Tomorrow Drypaw and Bravepaw will become warrior." Lagoonbreeze spotted a big brown tom pad over to a smaller black tom. That must be Couragewind and Bravepaw. He thought. A huge blue she-cat sat by the medicine den with a smaller gray tom. Leafwind and Wrappaw. He realized. The two medicine cats dissapeared in the medicine den to make traveling wraps. Oracleglow spoke again. "And we are leaving right now." Lagoonbreeze gasped. So soon? What about foxes? They come right before and during night! He spoke up before his leader could dismiss the Clan. "Shouldn't you take just a couple more warriors?" Oracleglow narrowed her eyes. "Lagoonbreeze, we are a small group, not a battle party, but I guess we should take more warriors. Lagoonbreeze and Deadlyoak." Splashpaw's spiteful whine rose from the back of the crowd. "I want to go? Why can't I go?" "No!" Oracleglow snipped at her scornfully. "I want to stay!" Lagoonbreeze called. "Fine! Stay! Everyone is dismissed. Group, let's leave." The blue she-cat bounded down the rock to the ground. As the chosen cats swarmed behind her, Leafwind and Wrappaw scurried toward them with several leaf wraps in their jaws. After the group had eaten their share, they vanished through the entrance of the camp. Lagoonbreeze sighed and worked his way through the darkness to the warriors' den.
A high-pitched screech reached Lagoonbreeze's ears. He opened his eyes. "Powerheart! He's gone!" Ravenstrike yowled. A quick scuffle sounded from the corner. Lagoonbreeze glanced over to see what it was, his fur on end. A brown tom slipped out of the den. It was Couragewind. What was he doing? Lagoonbreeze followed, but he was gone. He picked up Couragewind's scent trail. Something tht would lead to Couragewind!
Lagoonbreeze stopped. The scent trail stopped at the . . . gorge? Couragewind's voice was up ahead. "Powerheart! No!" Lagoonbreeze jumped out of the bushes quietly. Powerheart's body lay in the current, wedged between two rocks. "Murderer!" Lagoonbreeze snarled, his claws unsheathed. Couragewind whipped around. "Me?" Lagoonbreeze took a step toward him, lip curled. "Yes, YOU."

Errie. A great read. The always potent mix of haunted places and isolation is a lure for any reader, as well as for the story itself, which verberates distant echoes of Shirley Jackson, of those things that are from the unknown.
