Lake Como: A Novel by Anita Hughes

Hallie Elliot has a perfect life. She is an up-and-coming interior designer in one of San Francisco's most sought after firms, and has just recently become engaged to Peter, a brilliant young journalist. But when she stumbles upon Peter and her boss in what seems to be a compromising position, her trust in her perfect life is shaken.
So Hallie escapes to Lake Como, Italy to spend time with her half-sister, Portia Tesoro, an Italian blueblood dealing with the scandal of a public estrangement from her cheating husband. While staying in the Tesoro villa, Hallie falls in love with the splendor and beauty of Lake Como, and finds work designing the lakeside estate of a reclusive American tech mogul. The caretaker of this beautiful estate is a handsome man named Angus, and Hallie finds herself drawn to his charm and kindness, despite hints of a dark secret in his past.
But just as Hallie is beginning to find her footing on Italian soil, she uncovers a family secret that upends all the truths she's believed about herself, and calls into question the new life she's built in Lake Como.
Sisterhood, family, career, and sumptuous descriptions of Italian life fill the pages of this newest offering by Anita Hughes. Lake Como is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story of love, self-discovery, and the quest for truth.

Lake Como is a warm and insightful know about secrets, second chances, forgiveness, acceptance and sometimes the need to say goodbye and move on in life. Author Anita Hughes is a master with descriptions and dialog, and she created some wonderful characters. Her location descriptions are spot on, as are her descriptions of art, architecture, and human emotion. Lake Como was thoroughly enchanting and is at the top of my summer reads this year.

Hallie and Peter have been dating for a while now.  Hallie has been less than subtle about her desire to get engaged to Peter.  One day, Hallie finds Peter and her boss in a compromising position.    In an attempt to prove to Hallie that what she saw was innocent, Peter proposes to Hallie.  But Hallie isn’t ready to forgive and forget what she saw that night.  She decides to go to Lake Como to visit with her half-sister, Portia, who is having relationship issues of her own.  Separated from her cheating husband and living back home in her family’s prestigious villa, Portia and Hallie spend quality sister time together.  But when Hallie discovers her mother’s hidden diaries of when she was younger, family secrets come out.  Secrets that Hallie’s mother, Francesca, didn’t intend for anyone to find out. While in Lake Como, Hallie falls in the love with the beauty and culture of Italy.  She takes a job designing the Villa Luce, which reminds her of castles she’s read about in fairytales.  She becomes intrigued by the mystery surrounding the villa’s owner who she was told was an American billionaire and recluse.  While working at the villa, Hallie becomes close with the villa’s estate manager, Angus.  She’s starting to develop strong feelings for him until she discovers who he really is.   Can Hallie get past all the secrets that she’s discovering?  Or will she find it too hard to forgive the very people she thought she could trust the most?  Come along with Hallie as she explores Lake Como and discovers herself in the process.   Lake Como is a wonderful book about self-discovery, family ties and new beginnings.  I felt like I was a part of the book as I read each page.  The way that Anita Hughes describes every detail made me feel like I was living the adventure along with Hallie.  I enjoyed each character and the struggles and triumphs they faced.  I also enjoyed how relatable they each were.  I very much enjoyed this book.  It is the perfect book to take with you on vacation … or to take you away to make you feel like you are on a vacation.  I would definitely recommend this book to others.  Once again, Anita Hughes produced a book worthy of five stars.

I was very fond of Hallie, she didn't just side step what Peter did nor did she go crazy. I liked how she wasn't hard nor a pushover. She does give herself some space and goes to Italy. Her sister, Portia has a lot on her plate and Hallie can center on her rather than herself. When she gets there Portia ends up taking off and the Italian men in the area have taken notice of Hallie. Before she knows it, Hallie has landed herself a job of a lifetime and the attraction of a new man. Just as everything seems to be as it should be, when Hallie stumbles onto some unexpected secrets. Secrets when revealed changes lives. I have read and enjoyed all of Anita Hughes books, but I have to say this is my favorite! Always Hughes opens the door to an upper class elite. I love how Hallie seems so down to earth even though she is has this amazing lifestyle. It makes me able to really connect to the characters. The issues of an overbearing family member, cheating husbands and boyfriends, sisters needing help, lies being told to matter what we can all relate (but truthfully dealing with it while staying at Lake Como would help to soften the blow). I felt Lake Como moved right along, it had an easy flow. The twists and turns were very natural. I didn't see everything coming the way it did.  I love how Hughes seems to answer those questions that pop up for me while reading. I normally try to write my reviews right after I read the book, but this time I didn't have a chance to. As I began writing my review, I found myself enjoying the story all over again. A great book and I'm recommending! (hey it's cold outside, so warm up with Lake Como!)

Wow! What a fantastic book! First, please let me start by saying I highly recommend all of the books of Anita Hughes! Why? She takes me to a place, draws me into the story, and keeps me reading all night! Lake Como? Great read. Great setting. Beautiful cover. Inside the cover, is a lovely story focusing on family dynamics and secrets. However, I also view this book as a love letter to Lake Como, because the description of the area is so detailed and beautiful.

I loved Anita Hughes first two novels, but I think this may be my favorite. LAKE COMO is 24 carat gold escapism--with family jewels and glittering multi-million dollar homes on Lake Como. This novel took me outside of my life and transported me into a fairytale of designer clothes and champagne, stunning natural settings and gourmet food. And yet the characters were also struggling with real life issues of trust, self-discovery and forgiveness. A fabulous read on so many levels!

A beautiful escape. Reading this book makes you feel like you're right there visiting Lake Como. Hallie Elliot has it all, a great job, a wonderful boyfriend and loves her life living in San Fransisco. But, when she sees her boyfriend with another woman, she starts doubting how perfect her life really is. She decides to take a break from the relationship and goes to Lake Como to visit her half sister who is having marriage problems. It's a whole other world over there. Everything changes when she finds her mother's old diaries and reads them. Secrets come out of the past and bring out a wide range of emotions. She decides to stay longer and helps decorate one of the grandest homes (if you can call it a home) on the lake. There she meets a wonderful man who has a whole list of secrets himself. I enjoyed this book as much as I have the other books Anita Hughes has written. She's a fabulous story teller and makes you feel you are right there. The descriptions are amazing.
