About the Author

Walter Stoffel is a freelance writer and publisher who specializes in human interest memoir and fiction. Though having previously participated in multiple dog and cat rescues, nothing prepared him for his life with the title character in Lance: A Spirit Unbroken.
The author has a rich work history that currently includes teaching GED and counseling inmates at local correctional facilities. He also has experience as a certified mental health screener. For many years, he lived and worked in various South American countries. Most unique occupation: chipping excess concrete off the undersides of bridges in Virginia. All his coworkers were wearing prison stripes.
Mr. Stoffel is a member of the Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group, Pennwriters and Barbara's Writing Group, a critiquing association.
When not writing, he loves to read, travel, work out, and watch bad movies.
The author has a B.A. in psychology and is a credentialed alcoholism and drug counselor. He lives in Canadensis, PA with his wife Clara, their dog Buddy (a rescue) and their cat Winky (another rescue).
Personal accomplishment: after having hip replacement surgery, Walter entered a marathon and finished it - dead last.
Extra special personal accomplishment: surviving seven years living with the devil dog (Lance).

"Lance would have been a great dog if he'd grown up in a healthy environment. He was an even greater dog because he hadn't. Dogs typically don't ask a lot from their owners, but what they do ask for is apparently too much for some owners to give". One of the most compelling books I have ever read, in relation to pets, and I also have had three rescue dogs as members of my family. Lance was an abused dog and was kept living as a prisoner by the Schmidts. He was a survivor and was, thankfully, befriended by neighbor Anna and then, later, Walter, who rescued him. Walter and his wife Clara were heroes. Walter takes us along on the experience, adventure, education, and heartache, through an excellent narration. I found it difficult to put the book down, and it will definitely go on my list as a "re-read". I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

If you love dogs, you’ll enjoy this book. It is nonfiction, being Walter’s experience with rescuing a border collie from hell, but bears out the cliché of fact being stranger than… Lance was in incredibly traumatized and abused dog, and the extent of the cruelty keeps emerging as the story unfolds. However, this is not a horror story, or even a sad one, but one full of laughs, partly thanks to Walter’s light, humorous, clear writing style. To most people, Lance would have been impossible to live with, but Walter and his wife, Clara, have my unbridled admiration. They reacted to a multiplicity of impossible behavior with unconditional love for a four-legged person who desperately needed it. If you want an amusing read, and at the same time be inspired, you can’t go past Lance’s story.
