¿What a read!¿ 5 stories Jenny wants to figure out what happened to her sister and her niece. She escapes from the heavy hand of her father and seeks out the truth. She runs into danger. Will she and her new-found friends survive? Will Jenny leave behind her father¿s atheistic views to find Christ? Will she find love? I admittedly procrastinated before reading this book. The cover is not that appealing. It looked like a book of fluff. I was wrong. The action starts immediately, and it does not let go. This is both a love story and a mystery. There are several questions to solve in this book. You will keep guessing until the end. There is a glimpse of the ignorance of mental illness until recent decades.

A grueling train ride to Kahlerville, Texas is almost too much for Jenny Martin, but she endures whatever humiliation comes her way in order to bring her niece back to her Ohio home. Jenny¿s mission to find her sister¿s daughter takes her on a journey that opens doors to life-changing events. From the beginning, Jenny was wary of mysterious stranger Aubrey Turner. Will he help or hinder her quest? She needs information, so she steps from the rail car into one discovery after another. At the home of handsome doctor Grant Andrews, she learns of her sister¿s last request and peeks out the window at the child she¿s been searching for. Grant takes her to her sister¿s grave in the picturesque serenity of the Piney Woods Cemetery. Jenny¿s heart is strangely softened toward the people of Kahlerville. She even meets a friend who helps her find the key to hidden treasure. In this second book in DiAnn Mills¿ Texas Legacy series, we welcome back beloved Casey and Morgan Andrews and catch up on what¿s been going on in Kahlerville since the first book. In Lanterns and Lace, Mills¿ characters draw us into the wild Texas setting and keep us there for a romantic picnic under a large shade tree. There is suspense behind every door and a final twist that keeps readers turning pages until the very end.

Jenny Martin has come to Kahlerville on a mission to find her two-year old niece. She already knew of her sister Jessica¿s unsavory lifestyle who ran away from home and became a prostitute and unwed mother. Jenny hopes by finding Jessica¿s daughter and bringing the girl home, Jenny herself would find favor with her austere parents. A single man, Dr. Grant Andrews honored the wish of a dying prostitute, his patient, and adopted her newborn child, raising the girl as his own in spite of the gossip that ensued. Now two years later, Jessica¿s sister has come to town and threatens to uproot his adopted daughter from the only home she has ever known. As tension increases, love sparks. Jenny is introduced to a frontier family who exhibits a faith unknown and inexplicable. She herself had been raised to believe in evolution, the innovative theories of Charles Darwin, a scientist long admired by her father. Jenny finds herself not only in conflict with her atheistic beliefs and the local physician, but also with a mysterious man, a gambler, who has followed her to Kahlerville. A page turner, Diann Mills had penned yet again another fascinating read.

In 1895 in Cleveland Jenny Martin learns that her fallen dove sister Jessica passed away leaving behind a two years old daughter, Rebecca. She travels to Kahlerville, Texas to bring her niece home with her. The trek on the Union Pacific is stifling and difficult with Jenny obtaining no sleep and little to eat. In the small Texas train station, Jenny faints hitting her head as she is ill. Fellow passenger Aubrey Turner who knows all about her and her sibling sends for Dr. Grant Andrews who arrives to help Jenny.----------------- Jenny soon learns that Grant has adopted Rebecca and with the help of his housekeeper Mimi is raising the child with love. Ready to contest custody, Jenny realizes that her niece is contented living with Grant and Mimi. Still though she reluctantly accepts that Rebecca needs to remain with Grant, she still wants to be there as a loving aunt besides which she likes the town and its residents. As Jenny and Grant begin to fall in love, their differences over the role of God in their lives keeps them apart whereas he has found the Lord, she was raised to believe solely in science. Meanwhile Aubrey insists he and Jessica were an entry and that she died hiding a treasure of his that he demands Jenny find or else people she cares about will die.--------------- This superb western romance is a terrific inspirational tale that interweaves its message of have faith in the Lord whether things are going good or bad into the exciting plot so that sub-genre fans first and foremost obtain a strong late nineteenth century Texas tale. Jenny and Grant debate faith vs. Darwinism until she eventually finds religion in the ¿foxhole¿.
