Larry Bond's First Team by Larry Bond, Jim DeFelice

The New York Times bestselling author of the classic technothrillers Red Phoenix and Day of Wrath, Larry Bond has won praise for the gritty authenticity of his military-political adventures as well as for his matchless talent at generating edge-of-your-seat suspense. Now Bond debutes an exciting new series that rockets straight from the cutting edge of America's war on terror . . .

Officially designated the Joint Services Special Demands Project, "The Team" is a unique unit created to address unconventional threats in an unconventional manner, beyond the beurocratic restraints of either the U.S. intelligence or military establishments. With an almost unlimited budget, the Team, consisting of a CIA officer, two Special Forces commandos, and one outnumbered Marine--is authorized to track vital intel and then take immediate action.

A radical response to perilous times, the Team has never been more needed than this very moment: a quantity of radioactive waste, being shipped across the former Soviet Union, has gone missing. In the wrong hands, the stolen material can be converted into a "dirty bomb" capable of rendering any American city uninhabitable for centuries. With time running out, the Team must locate and neutralize the threat--unaware that their unseen enemy has already chosen a target: the island paradise of Honolulu.

Larry Bond starts his new military novel series off with a bang in 'First Team', an exceptionally well-written and fast-paced action/thriller about a team of four operatives specifically chosen from various branches of the American military's SpecOps community (CIA, Marine Force Recon, Army Special Forces) to unconventionally combat the war on terrorism. With 'off-the-books', unlimited financial backing from the U.S. government...an entire team of dedicated data analysts and technical support staff in the Pentagon backing their every move...and a very B-A-D situation brewing in Russia where large quantities of radioactive waste used by terrorists in building 'dirty bombs' has turned up missing...well, you've got all the ingredients you need for a FABULOUS storyline!! And Larry Bond does a terrific job of telling us one one in this sizzling debut effort. Even readers who don't particularly enjoy reading techno-thrillers can find something to like about Bond's style...every chapter is relatively short, with action and plot-twists on almost every page. I literally read this book in about four sittings, I found THAT HARD to put down! The main character Bob Ferguson (Team-leader and master CIA agent/spy) reminds me a bit of Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in the film 'True Lies'...very capable, wise-cracking, and equally deadly with his hands as he is with any weapon. So if you enjoyed that film, it is definitely worth your time to give this one a chance!

First off, Larry Bond and Tom Clancy are my favorite writers for fiction. However¿ This is not like any of Larry Bond¿s first three books: Red Phoenix, Vortex, and Cauldron. It does resemble his latter two of Day of Wrath, and Enemy Within. I found it a good book and easy to follow, but not to the level of his first three. It is fairly typical of most terrorist plotted techno-thrillers out today. It is worth buying, but only in the bargain bin or paperback.

This is a disappoitment. I have been a Larry Bond fan since his first novel. The banter and conversations distract from the plot. They make the characters inane and ineffectual. The plot becomes secondary to the attempted wisecracks of the cast.

As a big fan of all of Larry Bond¿s novels I was very disappointed with the quality of this work. The teasing/mocking between the cast is in very poor taste, too distracting from the plot. At times I was not sure what the plot was.

My first Larry Bond novel since Red Phoenix and I was pleasantly surprised. Dialogue was great...the characters and the team where believable, not over-the-top. As with many other books in this genre, you would love to see more character development but the plot was entertaining and I look forward to another novel from these writers.

I'm am very glad I read this book. It had many parts to it as it went along and you knew where it was as you flip the pages, it was always the black page. I felt that the battles were very strong at times then weakend, their always seemed to be something missing. Not once in that book at least I think did he write the words ' Military Warfare' because that is what he mostly talks about. Ofcourse I may of saw those words at the end of the book. I also suggest the Vortex

Have been a devoted reader of Larry Bond and place him in the ranks of Stephen Coonts and Harold Coyle in the military/technothriller genre. Wouldn't miss any new effort, but in my view 'First Team' falls waaaaay short of the quality of his previous works. The plot seems disjointed with no easily identifiable direction. His previous works were always compelling reads, with each plot building momentum towards a thrilling and heroic end. Not so with 'First Team'. The dialogue is filled with excessive repartee between the major characters--much more than is necessary to develop their personalities; so much that it detracts from the action of their mission at any given time. Overall, the story just doesn't move along and I found it difficult to sustain my interest. I don't recall Bond sharing authorship in his previous titles, and can only wonder if Jim DeFelice wrote most of the book, with minimal input by Larry Bond--but am merely speculating here. I rated it 2-stars, but barely. Would not pass this book along to a friend. Hope his next book is better.
