I didn't know anything about Jimmy Winkfield or the role of African Americans in the history of horse racing before I read this book. The text is exciting and emotional and the illustrations are just beautiful. My child and I both enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it to anyone interested in little known figures in American sports history.

Crystal Hubbard does it again in bringing a little-known figure in African American history to light in a way that is exciting and interesting to adults and children. This book is the story of jockey Jimmy Winkfield and it takes you from his humble birth in Chilesburg, Kentucky to his glory days riding for European royalty in the most famous races of the day. Winkfield was the Tiger Woods of his sport at the turn of the century and I loved the genuine warmth and energy Ms. Hubbard put into the telling of the story. This is a must-read in every classroom and at every bedtime. Kudos to Hubbard and I look forward to her next.

17 May 1875 was the debut of the Kentucky Derby. Name: Jimmy WinKfield (a.k.a. "Wink"); Birthplace: Chilesburg, Kentucky in 1882, Jimmy was one of seventeen children. Who gave Jimmy hope that his dream would come to pass? When he went to Latonia, Kentucky what did Jimmy do? Who was Jockey Joe? During the year of 1899 what event took place in Jimmy's life? Saturday, 3 May 1900 was a special day in Louisville, Kentucky do you know why? April 1901 what happened to Jimmy? *Enjoy learning the history of Jimmy Winkfield's life in an engaging biography. *Well researched and rather fascinating information is in this book for you to marvel over. **Learned many facts about a person I've never heard of before until this book. *Educational. *Informative.
