Last Witness by Jilliane P. Hoffman

A riveting new novel from the internationally bestselling author of Retribution.

Cops are dying. Hunted down while on patrol, they are being murdered while trying to protect the citizens of Miami from this very type of crime. Dominick Falconetti, an agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, is charged with heading a task force to investigate. Details at the crime scenes point to a drug connection, and when a highly-placed gang member disappears, it reinforces Dominick's suspicions that these cops were all involved in something unsavory.

C. J. Townsend, the state prosecutor he has loved for the past three years-ever since they met on the infamous Cupid investigation-is getting the calls in the middle of the night as well. As the state attorney who put Florida's last serial killer behind bars, she's the logical choice to help stop this one. But before long, C.J. begins to suspect that she knows an even more terrible secret than Dominick does about why these cops are being murdered.

A tense, gripping crime drama set against the richly detailed background of the Miami legal system and police department,

Last Witness is an extraordinary novel.

After reading "Retribution" I couldn't wait for a follow-up. However, this book is just OK. I wanted to see how it ended but I found it easy to put down. --K--

I liked RETRIBUTION better than I thought I might so then I wanted to read this next book by Jilliane Hoffman. I will have to say that the whole idea of the 'Cupid Killer' that Assistant State Attorney C.J. Townsend put away, having endless appeals and C.J. quivering in her boots every time she thinks he could win on appeal, is becoming tiresome. I want to see C.J. exhibit some backbone and live up to the rep that she supposed to have as a fearless attorney. The death club that the murderers in this book appear to belong to, could be worth pursuing further. If the next book hashes and rehashes the 'Cupids' jail term, I won't be reading it.

I coulnd't put this book down. The details about CJ Townsend made me feel as if she was someone I know or would like to get to know. Excellent book well written.

The book's outcome is predictable by the midpoint of the book. The characters seemed to have devolved from Retribution. Mildly disappointing.

I picked up the first one by chance and loved it. I could not wait for this one to come out. I only hope we don't have to wait too long for the next book.

My husband and I listened to the unabridged version of this book. Very exciting book, read by one of my favorite audiobook readers. Great sequel to 'Retribution', read 'Retribution' first, then dig in to the book ride of your life. Recommend.

This is a great book! I enjoyed her first book Retribution just as much. She did not disappoint with her second book. Don't miss out on this new author. She will keep you on the edge of your seat and hold your attention throughout the entire book.

Audio book aficionados will remember with pleasure Kathe Mazur's sterling readings of 'Retribution' and 'Bushworld.' She brings the same eloquence and sharp narrative skills to this tension driven tale focusing on the brutal murders of policemen. Set in Miami, we again meet C.J. Townsend, Assistant State Attorney, who is repulsed and livid when she sees the mutilated dead body of Victor Chavez, a cop who was killed as he patrolled the streets. She's the one to be called in when a serial killer is suspected, as she's responsible for the recent conviction of just such a madman. However, murder comes close to home when she soon begins receiving midnight phone calls. Her fiancé, Special Agent Dominick Falconetti, has been named to head a team to investigate the killings. In Miami, the thought is often the drug world is to blame but this doesn't seem to be true in this case. What begins to emerge is a scenario even more terrifying than any even the sickest of mobsters could devise. As a former Assistant State Attorney in Miami, author Hoffman knows mean streets and psychopathic killers - she brings all to frightening life. - Gail Cooke

If you like a good story, strong characters and a fight for the lesser of two evils, this is your book. The tale is excellently sprinklered with clues and valuable information for the reader, as well as backstory on the main characters so even if you did not read Retribution (which is a must as well), you are up on all the info you need to solve the mystery. Julianne Hoffman is a solid writer who gains your trust as you travel into her world and learn her secrets and where the bodies are buried. You cannot put this down, and you cannot wait to finish it. This is a solid, well told tale for every reader.

It has been almost three years since a serial killer terrorized the citizens of Miami and it was largely due the brilliant prosecution of assistant state attorney C.J. Townsend that William Rupert Bantling was found guilty and sentenced to the death penalty. An anonymous telephone call had a police officer stop his car and open Bantling¿s trunk where the cop found the body inside. They had enough cause to get a warrant to search his home where plenty of evidence from his other fourteen victims was also found................ C.J. knew going in that the officer didn¿t have probable cause to search the car but she wanted to try him and find Bantling guilty because he raped her continuously for four hours. Everyone who knew about the tainted evidence entered into a conspiracy of silence but now there is a new serial killer operating in the Miami area and his victims are linked to the trial of William Rupert Bantling which means C.J. is in danger.................... Jillian Hoffman¿s thriller is on a par with the works of Patricia Cornwell, Nancy Taylor Rosenberg and Barbara Parker. C.J. has never gotten over the assault and rape that occurred three years ago and it is affecting her relationship with Special Agent Dominick Falconetti of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. It takes the protagonist a while to figure out what is happening but she lacks the evidence and doesn¿t have a clue who is behind the murders. LAST WITNESS chillingly demonstrates what is wrong within the justice system................. Harriet Klausner
