Friendship sloops, so named for the Maine Coast village from whence they evolved, have sailed across oceans to the corners of the globe and across time from the nineteenth into the twenty-first century. Form followed function, as these workboats were hand-crafted by their owners to serve in the Midcoast fisheries. They sailed well and fished well, and were a beauty to behold. When motor eclipsed sail in the commercial fisheries, it was rugged good looks that saved the Friendships from extinction. Function then followed form, as Friendships were adopted by yachtsmen as pleasure craft. Friendships shared architectural qualities with their larger cousins, the schooners, which co-evolved in the late eighteen hundreds. And they too, have survived the march to modernity, as windjammers in the tourist trade. It takes more than a pretty face to go the distance. A wooden boat is an organic thing, prey to the ravages of time and the elements. It is the symbiotic relationship between boats and beings lies at the heart of their longevity. For more than a half century, the men and women of the Friendship Sloop Society have endeavored to preserve these venerable craft, and to sponsor their restorations and reincarnations. Century-old Friendships still ply the Maine Coast, and new ones, wrought of both wood and glass, augment the fleet. Lasting Friendships tells the story of the venerable vessels and of the passionate men and women who are dedicated to their preservation. This well-crafted volume will make a handsome addition to anyone’s coffee table or nautical library.
