During the years 1986-88, he served as Deputy Attorney General, the Chief Operating Officer, of the United States Department of Justice. Included among his charitable activities is his service as Chairman-Elect of the Board of Governors of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children and Chair of the National Center for Victims of Crime.
