Laura Thompson's novel, Laughter in the Canyon, sets up a beautiful flight for two young lovers over the Grand Canyon, then stops. But that's where the story starts again, crossing the world, enjoying the elegance of high society and poverty of jungle, the security of the rich and famous and the helplessness of political dissidence. Mystical powers protect and guide while Greek dance, French cuisine, Egyptian history and mythology all play their part. And "the path to enlightenment" might be more than mere teasing reference to the healing power of Reiki. Explosions, poison, and betrayal give way to the help of guardian spirits as the story flies round the world, providing a rapid-fire travelogue of beauty and nature. Scenes from National Geographic play out as a backdrop for wounded love. Disaster promises hope. Opera music plays. In the end, an angel's guidance, the sciences of astrology and reincarnation, and the gentle touches of meaningful coincidence, all combine in teaching Nicole learn to follow her heart. Recovering from tragedy, she finally visits India, where she learns at last the joy of loving someone "completely on all levels of existence: physical, mental and spiritual." The history's well-researched, the mythology fascinating, and the locations are lovingly described. The mysteries of past lives thread through the story to a nicely modern-day, intriguing conclusion. And the novel's a surprisingly light quick read, given the mystique of its topics. Disclosure: I read this novel in the Popular Literary Fiction section of the Dan Poynter Global eBook Awards.

Beautiful and intelligent descriptive passages. The heroine was believable and her personality aptly described on the emotional, spiritual and intellectual levels. A touching love story that tugs on the heartstrings and transcends our earthly existence.
