The Cornwall Adventures

A trip to England sounds like a grand adventure, but Laurel Rowan can't escape from her true reality. Her mother is terminally ill, and her father needs her to go so he can spend his time at the hospital. On a train to Penzance, Laurel meets a new friend, Coll. On the property of her host, she stumbles upon a magical spring. There she meets the White Lady, who offers her a chance at gaining her heart's true desire, if only she can solve a riddle.

Pursuing her quest amidst the magic of the Cornish countryside, she is aided by Coll and her new friends Gort and Aisling. They are also helped by creatures of legend and myth, Vear Du, the Selkie, Gwin Scawen, the Cornish Piskie, Belerion the fire salamander, Morgawr the flying sea serpent who does Vear Du a favour, and Cormoran, the last giant of Cornwall. The friends must battle the odds in the form of bullies and confusing clues. Will they emerge victorious? Will Laurel have the courage to solve the riddle and fulfill her quest?

"Laurel's Quest is full of beautiful images: of the strange fairy folk, the Lady of the Lake, crystal horses and the labyrinth inside the Tor of Avalon. The touching sentiment of faith, hope, kindness and secrets revealed, reinforces the truth: there is magic in friendship." -Wendy Laharnar

"Once again Ms. Bell has rendered the imagery of her setting beautifully, and furthermore, I was literally spellbound by the smashing climax and finish! Bravo!" - Sara Durham

"A page turner! I really enjoyed reading this book, I was almost sad when I got to the last page. Colorful characters and great scenery, make this fantastic story unforgettable! I want to go to Cornwall to see these places for myself and look for piskies too!!" - Elanta

Reviewed by Michelle Mollohan for Readers' Favorite Laurel's Quest (The Cornwall Adventures Book 1) by Nancy M. Bell is a young adult fantasy novel. Laurel Rowan is sent to stay with a family friend in Cornwall while her mother fights cancer. Homesick and heartbroken at the thought of losing her mother, Laurel is desperate to find a way to save her mother. Along her journey to Sarie's home, she encounters Coll and, after battling a bully, they quickly become friends. She makes friends with several schoolmates, Aisling and Gort. She quickly realizes that everything is not as it seems and that the world is full of magical beings and places. She encounters the White Lady at a magical spring, who tells her that if she can solve the riddle in time, her mother will be healed. Laurel, along with her friends Aisling, Coll and Gort, must travel in search of clues to solve the riddle. Laurel is aided on the way by mystical creatures including the fire salamander and the half man-half seal Selkie, whose answers often lead to more questions. Laurel wonders if she will be able to solve the riddle before it is too late. Laurel's Quest (The Cornwall Adventures Book 1) by Nancy M. Bell is a captivating tale of a young girl's journey against all odds to save her mother, and the devotion of her friends in helping her in her quest. Laurel's Quest is full of fun and interesting characters. Nancy M. Bell weaves vivid descriptions of the historical locations the group visits and the mystical creatures that they meet. I enjoyed the banter between the characters as they joked about the differing language between their British and American upbringing.

This story was an absolute gem. Not only is it beautifully written with lovely descriptions of the settings, but it has a well-developed plot, and the characters are people you can relate to--full of flaws, but containing goodness in their hearts. The author has done much research into the history of Cornwall and myths and legends that go along with the area. Although it is written for the YA crowd, it is a story adults can treasure as well. I'm so glad that the story doesn't end with Laurel. I'm looking forward to seeing what adventures Gort had.
