Description: This is the state of Colorado version in the Law and Mental Health Professionals Series. Currently there are 26 other states available in the series and more states will be made available in the future. Each book is designed to review and integrate all of the laws that affect mental health professionals in their respective states.
Purpose: The purpose of this book and the series is to make mental health professionals intelligent consumers of legal services, ensure that they are aware of the laws and mandates in the provision of expert services within the legal system, and to comprehensively and coherently present the most up-to-date information available in their state. Additionally, the information will encourage mental health professionals to seek out further resources and lessen the degree of confusion between the mental health profession and the legal system. The book exceeds both the author's objectives and my expectations.
Audience: In general, this is a catch-all for mental health professionals inclusive, but not limited to, psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers. The potential use in clinical practice, research, and academia are self-evident. The editors are credible and knowledgeable in the field.
Features: Each of the books in this series is organized into eight sections covering legal credentialing, business matters, limitations on and liability for practice, families and juveniles, other civil matters, civil and criminal trial matters, criminal matters, and voluntary or involuntary receipt of state services. As state law is discussed, all of the chapters are considered to be standalone topics.
Assessment: As I review books in this series, I continue to be impressed by this novel approach to categorizing mental health law by state. Having reviewed other state editions, I remain excited by how the information is presented in clear, easy-to-read chapters, and how this book is able to maintain my attention. This book and the books in the series are recommended without reservation.
