Legal Justice an Emma Mason Mystery
In this third novel, Detective Emma Mason recovers from injuries sustained on the job. Her boyfriend Peter turns the room adjacent to his home library into a well-equipped space where she can recover in comfort and he can look after her. After the discovery of a secret room concealed behind bookshelves in the library, Emma explores and uncovers a long dead body hidden under rotting quilts. Her attempts to solve this cold case lead to interesting revelations including links between Peter's Nineteenth Century home, the Underground Railroad and the activities of abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
Meanwhile, Emma's partner Mitch Delaney is in charge of the Rochester Homicide Unit while she recovers. He is tasked with solving the case of a WWII Veteran found robbed and murdered in his own home. Mitch recruits rookie officer, Sam Geraci to help investigate the evidence which reveals a complex web of fraudulent activity, including burglary, money laundering, bank fraud and murder. Mitch and rookie detective Geraci use every resource at their disposal to expose the crimes and nail the the unscrupulous attorney getting rich by scamming elderly clients.
Explore the world of police procedures as the detectives interact with the crime unit, the medical examiner's office, the ballistics lab and the patrol officers who risk their lives daily to serve and protect. Learn about real techniques and consider several conceptual ones I developed because they would certainly enhance the repertoire of law enforcement should they be available in the future.
Woven into this story is the unlikely courtship of Emma by Peter, a wealthy suitor who has fallen head over heels for her. The challenges they face as their different worlds continue to collide. Peter struggles to reconcile Emma's dangerous occupation with his desire to nurture and protect, while Emma struggles to manage the unfamiliar emotions he ignites in her while learning to accept his attentions without risking her independence.
This story is rich with investigative science and clips along the streets of Rochester at an invigorating pace. You will encounter insights into the history and events that continue to make the city a friendly and affordable destination. Readers looking for a smart, fast paced, entertaining mystery will not be disappointed.
