Nancy Curteman, author of "Murder Down Under" had this to say about "The Legend of Koolura:" In the "The Legend of Koolura" Michael Thal takes young readers on an adventure that couples magic super powers with the everyday life of intermediate grade students. Through his main character, Koolura Akopyan, a young sixth grade girl, Thal explores the complexities of school kid friendships, the adjustments needed to manage in today's multicultural classrooms and the importance of good values. Koolura is a normal student at Bethune Elementary School. She experiences the same kinds of problems like the other students. She suffers through poor treatment by snooty girls, comforts a friend whose mother is going through cancer tests, and another whose parents are divorcing. She tutors students who can't read or do math. She worries about grades, tests and homework. Every young reader can identify with Koolura and her friends. Koolura is also different from other students at Bethune because she has the "Cool." It gives her super powers. Sadly, it has also forced her to lead the life of a nomad. A treacherous stalker seeks to destroy her and steal the "Cool" for himself. Koolura's fearful father has moved her from place to place in an effort to keep her safe. Koolura's use of her "Cool" to help her fellow students through their difficulties and her effort to keep one step ahead of Neb, her stalker, is what makes Thal's book an exciting experience for young readers. Special note: I taught sixth grade and when I read Thal's vivid descriptions of school life, I thought I was back in the classroom again.

The Legend of Koolura is the story of a sixth grade girl with amazing psychic abilities. Thal tells the story in the third person narrative showing readers the life of a sixth grader and the fear she experiences trying to foil a stalker bent on her destruction. This is one book both parent and teen can enjoy together.

Koolura’s mother was killed by a decoolerizer ray gun when she was just a newborn. Just as this hateful man called Neb steals the mother’s cool he is nearly caught and has to download all the ‘cool’ into baby Koolura – to retrieve later. She and her father have relocated many times trying to outrun horrible Neb. But now Koolura has found a new school that she likes. She has managed to make friends and she has a wonderful teacher. Koolura is staying put! What a wonderful, likeable, strong character Koolura is! As she slowly comes into her powers we appreciate her ability to make sure she still treats everyone with respect and she doesn’t ever even contemplate using them for harm or to gain advantage or power. Except perhaps to get nasty Neb caught by the police. The multi-cultural aspect to this novel is brilliantly discussed – there is no prejudice or negativity directed toward the different children. Positivity is key in Koolura’s attitude. Gosh I really liked this character – such a great message for kids. Koolura’s powers were a really fun addition to an already great story about school life, friends and having enough ‘Kool’ to be a really awesome person. A fabulous, attention-grabbing, compelling and uplifting read. I just loved this book and happily recommend it.

This book is a great read! Thal is a great writer and truly brings this exciting tale to life. The novel is about a young girl who acquires some "cool" powers, but an evil man is trying to take them away from her. If you love reading about the supernatural, like I do, you will love this book. I highly recommend it!
