LES MISÉRABLES ('The Wretched' or 'The Miserable Ones') is widely considered to be one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century and of Western literature. It follows the lives of several French characters over a seventeen-year period from 1815 and to the 1832 June Rebellion. The novel focuses on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean, jailed for years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving children. Meet the Author

Victor-Marie Hugo (1802-1885) was a French poet, artist, playwright, novelist, republican, and civil rights champion. His works LES MISÉRABLES and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME are read widely throughout the world. Although for much of his life he was a Catholic and a monarchist, Hugo's views began to change after the 1848 revolutions. Later in life he was a dedicated republican and freethinker.
