Lessons from the Line: Why Every Leader Should Be a Firefighter for a Day by Kevin Baum

Why are firefighters so universally valued? How is it that a home can burn to the ground, yet the owners still bring the responding firefighters milk and cookies, give them hugs, and tell them thank you? While much can be written about the fire service in a post-9/11 world, one truth is constant: their customers love them.
Why is that? Are there lessons for leaders or managers that can be extracted from this profession and applied to general organizational life? What would your organization gain if your customers loved you, your products, and your services? Author and management consultant Kevin Baum explores these questions and more in Lessons from the Line. Adding his twenty years' experience as a professional firefighter and chief officer to his work with organizations around the world, Kevin drills into the unique profession of firefighting to build a practical tool for organizational and leadership development-the Firefighter Model. A unique blend of management and leadership practices, this innovative model can be applied to organizations of any size, with any mission, in any place. Lessons from the Line is a fast-paced, real-world look at organizational life from the firefighter's perspective that will give you the tools to create an organization of heroes.

As someone who covers management issues for a living I found Kevin Baum's book a great read. Its engaging narrative style make this one of the few management books I've actually read in the past few years. He's a masterful story teller, and each story has a strong message behind it. I highly recommend it, even if you're not in management and just curious about what a firefighter's life is like--being on the front lines of public safety in a busy city.

Finally an inspirational leadership book we can all relate to. As a U.S. Army veteran and a senior manager with a fortune 25 company, I can truly say this book is a must read! As employees, we seek leaders that have learned these lessons. As leaders, we strive to learn what motivates and inspires others, and here it is. Lessons from the Line is filled with powerful stories from a career Firefighter. The 'lessons' are applicable in the boardroom, classroom, locker room, and yes, even the Firehouse.

I just got a peek inside the firehouse, not the children's tour this time, but the grown-up one. Kevin not only reminded me of the bravery, duty and brotherhood bound up in being a firefighter, but gave lessons in leadership I can take back to my family, my job or my church.

This book provides far reaching lessons that are so common sense simplistic, that the reader cannot but help get the sense of them. Once you begin reading this, you won't be able to put it down until you've absorbed the fire house and fire ground stories and their powerful lessons in their entirety.

I'm in the 'performance management' business and read a lot of the latest releases on leadership. This one is a jump start action book right from the front lines. The fire department experience is explained as it relates to good business practice and leadership and has you on the edge of your seat from chapter one. I have recommended it to several associates who only agree that the examples leave you inspired to make a change ...personally and in your sphere of influence. I highly recommend this book.

Kevin made it very clear that the Firefighter Model should be the base culture for all of us, at home and in business. As a former oil company employee, I can now see what they were trying to do but they really never hit the mark. I can't wait to share this book with our staff.

Lessons from the Line is a fantastic read for those in leadership roles within their organization or for anyone who wants to be inspired. Kevin's stories and experiences are thought provoking and can be applied to the corporate world as well as towards your own personal growth. Kevin teaches you to take risks, to push yourself to your limits, to conquer your fears and to challenge yourself to achieve greatness or to learn from your failures. Kevin relates his own experiences as a rookie firefighter and his plight to become Austin's fire chief and how his teachings saved not only thousands of lives but changed the way Austin managed their entire fire department. I started and finished this book on a flight, couldn't put it down.
