Reviewed by Melinda Hills for Readers' Favorite Three brothers, Graham, Cameron and Ian, receive great news when their parents allow them to go on a solo camping trip in the Cascade Mountains near their home outside of Seattle, Washington. Initially disappointed because their dad says no, they can’t believe it is actually good news because he will take them the following weekend in Let’s Go Camping: The Clearing by Stephen George. All week long, the boys prepare what they will need to take for a successful trip. Friday afternoon finally arrives and the family packs the van and heads to the clearing where the boys will set up camp. Unfortunately, their excitement and lack of coordination with one another made the unpacking a bit disorganized and they spent the first night without a fire. Common sense and tremendous ingenuity bring great success the next day, though, and they have a wonderful time exploring the area. The trip is full of excitement and even some danger involving wild animals and a severe storm, but when it is all over, the boys know that they will remember this trip for the rest of their lives. Stephen George has captured the love of camping that these three brothers share and the excitement they feel as they prepare for their first solo trip. In an easy to read style, the story unfolds with the boys acting like typical brothers and doing things carefully but not perfectly. It demonstrates problem solving and navigating interpersonal relationships while providing a fantastic view of the outdoors and the enjoyment of nature. Let’s Go Camping: The Clearing is an enjoyable look at a world that many kids don’t get the chance to see first-hand.
A wonderful heart warming adventure story full of excitement. I read this story to my kids and enjoyed it as much as they did. I especially liked the detailed interaction with nature and wildlife. We felt like we were right there camping out sharing the experience.
