Overview

Hector St John De Crevecoeur emigrated to New France in North America in 1755. Following the British defeat of the French Army in 1759 he moved to New York State, then the Province of New York, where he took out citizenship, adopted the English-American name of John Hector St. John, He bought a sizable farm in Orange County, New York, where he prospered as a farmer.
In 1782 He started writing about life in the American colonies and the emergence of an American society.These letters were very popular both in the United States and Europe being one of the first records of life in the emerging United States.
