Kris and some of her sisters ventured further south, to America, where Kris began her career as a motel maid, then journeyed up the success ladder across eight states and many universities. She is currently a retired Social Work Professor living on Californiás Central Coast.
Letters to Iceland is a collection of letters Kris wrote when she was in America, far away from her family, feeling homesick and alienated. Having kept most of the letters, she decided to use them to tell the story of her life and heritage for her grandchildren, "so they would know where they came from," Kris said.
