Leverage by Tom Spears

In the world of American business, we often perceive hard work and persistence as the key behaviors that allow us to get ahead. They are often touted as the key elements of success.

But life is rarely that simple. At critical junctures, we are faced with significant choices that determine the arc of our remaining life. Sometimes those choices are subtle, such as who to stand next to at a cocktail party. Or they might be more obvious, like taking a job in a far off city, or agreeing to take back a cheating spouse.

Or pursuing a murderer.

Mark Carson was on a fast rise to the top of Global Guidance Corporation, a Minneapolis company that develops a variety of navigation and location products for consumers and the military. His wifes multiple affairs temporarily knocked him off the ladder, but after their divorce and some time spent trying to make sense of it all, he was working harder than ever to get ahead.

But not everyone believes hard work is the way to advance ones career. Some want to jump straight to the front of the line any way they can. Max Wong, a GGC engineer is one such person -- willing to take short cuts to reap the reward of significant wealth. But Wongs shadow employer, known only as Falcon has his own agenda. When Wongs usefulness runs out, Falcon is ready to move on, and Wong represents something he abhors -- a loose end.

Falcons solution to his problem leaves Carson is facing one of those critical choices -- one that will have long reaching impact on his life, and the lives of those around him. This time, rather than playing it safe, Carson selects the path less traveled. He decides to discover for himself who killed Max Wong, and why.
Carson quickly finds himself slipping deeper into a dangerous world of corporate crime, greed and violence. Teaming with co-worker Cathy Chin, he doggedly pursues the killers, even as it becomes clear they are deeply imbedded in GGC. The question becomes: Will he solve the crime before he and Chin become the next victims? And even if he succeeds, what will be left of his well ordered life?

Leverage was a one sit read for me. Luckily a long layover at the Houston airport gave me that opportunity. There is only one question I would ask- Who would play Mark Carson and Cathy Chin? This is made for the movies script. Quite the action, suspense, thriller- If you enjoyed this, try out Spear's next novel - Incentivize-

With a hint of Grisham, but a style all its own, this story of corporate intrigue & murder had me through to the last page. It had good character development, unpredictable plot twists, just enough action and a good pace. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more work from Tom Spears.

Tom Spears' "Leverage" is a corporate thriller with many twists and turns that will keep you guessing throughout the book. Personally I found a connection with the story's lead character Mark Carson, who's an avid runner too. Mark realizes he has to make some significant choices in his life and career. I often found myself asking myself "how I would have reacted in his situation?" You'll find it very hard to put this book down.

This Novel keeps you guessing. Tom’s experiences in the corporate world enable him to create situations that come to life for anyone that works in a corporate environment. I found myself cheering for Mark and the same time thinking “No, don’t do it Mark”. I look forward to reading the next Spears Novel.

Tom Spear’s Leverage is a corporate thriller with a double twist love story imbedded in the plot. The well developed characters draw you into their lives swirling with corporate politics and mistrust. The main character, Mark Carson, baffled when a work acquaintance chooses to die in his arms, decides to become and stay involved through danger, through love, through torture, and through deceit attempting to solve the riddle. Tom has concocted and written a tale that jerks at your emotions of fear and self doubt to tell a story about perseverance commitment.

It has been quite a while since I read a novel of this sort. Leverage reignited an interest in fiction that had been gone for quite a while. I'm grateful to the author for providing such a compelling story and I'm looking forward to reading more from him.

Tom has created characters that will be familiar to anyone in the corporate world. His experience in corporate politics and dynamics gives him the ability to make his characters real and recognizable. Leverage combines this familiarity and a quick paced action filled story into a must read combination. A great addition to the corporate thriller genre.

“Leverage” is a quick-moving adventure that drew me in and didn't let go until the end. The story follows a likeable “everyman” named Mark Carson who is pulled into a world over his head. The book made me wonder throughout: How would I react in the same situation? Who can Mark trust? What will he do next? How will he overcome the next hurdle? The plot was compelling and original. I would recommend “Leverage” for a good read, but make sure you leave enough time to finish it in one sitting – because you won’t want to put it down.

Tom Spears is a unique author who provides us with a high intensity thriller within a corporate environment at an excitement level of a Dan Koontz or James Paterson. I read this book in two days and wanted more. There is no doubt that you are with the characters...
