1878. The Russo-Turkish War resulted in victory. Erast Petrovich Fandorin has been shown much kindness, in every possible way, by the authorities, and personally awarded with the tsar's note of acknowledgement for his disclosing a Turkish spy network. But he is very upset, because he couldn't expose the spies promptly enough. From all the variants of rewards he chooses the way of further serving his motherland and asks to send him on a fetial mission to Japan. He is to travel there on board of the most modern liner of that time called "Leviathan". Almost concurrently, in one of the countries of Europe, a horrid and mysterious murder takes place. All the family of a well-known collector are killed in the most violent way. Notably, everybody, including children and servants, stayed in the dining-room, as if they were still going to have lunch. But there is a golden token found at the scene, and tokens like that were only given to first-class passengers of the liner "Leviathan". The mysterious murderer, his European chasers and Erast Fandorin are travelling on the same ship. Is that just a coincidence indeed?
