Oooooh this book raised my hackles with it’s twisty, underhanded activities .. an insight into a family dominated by one member who thinks they have everyone’s best interests at heart. It is SO realistic at times and that makes it scary! From the outset we know the end, no I’m not going crazy the ending is the beginning and this is the way the entire book plays with the mind of the characters. A loving mother/grandmother Judi dotes on her ‘boys’ she is of menopausal age and there is an underlying feeling of sympathy as she struggles with her body ageing. Her marriage is not as fulfilling as it once was, Henry is retired and pretty much occupies himself with his clubs etc. Son Ben is widowed with two young sons, Judi likes to help out and take care of them, as any loving grandma would. However, she is extremely overbearing and bossy, I wanted to yank Ben away from her clutches and advise him to grow up and be a father to his kids instead of letting mum rule the roost. Then along comes Amber .. Ben can’t quite believe his luck that he has found an ideal woman who will love him and his children. Just one problem Judi and Amber are soon at loggerheads in a typical in-law situation and tempers fray. Poor Ben stuck between the two women he adores but has no backbone to make a decision. I didn’t like Amber from the beginning, she just riled me, there was something about her that I couldn’t put my finger on and her attitude towards the family seemed OTT. This is where K.L Slater does such a tremendous job because I was shrieking at most of them at times and this story really got under my skin. It is just so believable, well paced, down to earth and frustrating as an outsider looking in. I think the only characters I had any inkling of feeling towards are Josh and Noah the grandchildren .. all the others are brilliantly horrendous! That is in no way a criticism I loved the premise and the fact the book produced such emotion in me. If you like a good psychological thriller with enough twists and turns to make you dizzy then you will love Liar. My thanks to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review, which I did voluntarily.

“A son is a son 'til he gets a wife, but a daughter is a daughter all her life. ” Judi is a proud mom to single dad Ben and grandmother to his sons, Noah and Josh. She's been taking care of all 'her boys' since Ben's wife died three years earlier. But then Ben meets Amber, the perfect woman for him. Everyone is happy that Ben has found someone ... everyone except Judi. Judi is very suspicious of Amber. But is there something really there ... or is it that she's afraid Amber will take her place with the family? Ben tries to keep the two women in his life happy. But he doesn't see what his mother sees when it comes to Amber. And as Ben gives over more and more hold to Amber over his two young sons, Judi becomes fearful for them. The further Judi delves into Amber’s personal life, the closer she gets to shocking secrets that could change everything. And Judi must make a decision that could lead to the most disastrous consequences. (from book synopsis) This is a fantastic well written psychological thriller. There are twists and turns that leave the reader breathless and unable to put the book down. The two women of this story are not very likeable. Judi is a controlling person who feels she must keep her family all to herself without regard to what they want. She's suffering extreme menopausal symptoms, but would rather suffer in silence than actually get help in relieving those symptoms. She plays a great martyr. There is something about Amber that just doesn't sit right. She's determined to cut Judi out of Ben's life, as well as her grandsons. She's lied about her past, her family, almost everything in order to gain what she wants. You might ask yourself .. just what is it that she does want? Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the advanced digital review copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is my first book written by K. L. Slater and it definitely won’t be the last. I loved this story. I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn’t put the book down, I just had to keep reading. I felt for poor Judi, seeing how a woman whisks away her beloved son and grandchildren. I wanted t shake some sense into Ben, for not seeing that Amber is not who she’s telling him. That it’s way too early and rushed to invite a woman he barely knows into his life, the boys lives. I was suspicious for everything Amber did, knowing that she has her own agenda for the things she’s doing. That she hated Judi was clear to see, but why? Why did she chose to hurt the children, make them sick and let them suffer? What does she really want. And Henry, why couldn’t he reach out to his wife and help her. See how she struggles and try to understand what she’s saying. Believing in his wife, that’s how it’s supposed to be, right! There was such amount of relieve when everything seemed to get back to normal. Ben finally seeing the truth, Henry showing his true colors and Amber on her way out. But then - BAM! Twist and turn, and nothing is like it seems. My jaw literally dropped. I don’t know what to think..... That’s amazing writing. I did not see that coming and I’m reading a lot of psychological thrillers. I enjoyed reading this book and dare you to read it, to find out for yourself how sick some people are without you’ll ever know. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture!
